Story of the film

The movie examines the lives of average Indian women who are separated by age and their circumstances, all while sharing the same surname. Gurveen (Arista Mehta) and Swati (Vanshika Taparia), school pals, deal with the demands of adolescence. Despite the help of her loving husband, Sudhir (Sharib Hashmi), Swati dislikes her career-focused mother, Jyoti (Sakshi Tanwar), who finds it difficult to juggle work and motherhood. Kiran (Divya Dutta), Gurveen’s mother, finds comfort in her love for Tambola, also known as Housie, despite feeling alone in a city she hasn’t yet embraced. State-level cricket player Tanvi (Saiyami Kher) is constantly demoralized by her self-centered partner. The movie tracks these five active individuals as they overcome their challenges.

The movie presents a viewpoint on accepting one’s body and not feeling guilty about personal decisions without passing judgment. Both Kashyap’s portrayal of the intricate ties between mothers and daughters and her account of teenage girls struggling with identity and growing pains are admirable. Even while the movie tackles important issues that many Indian families face, it occasionally feels crowded because it tries to cover too much ground in its two-hour runtime.

Her vividly rendered characters, which inspire compassion, humor, and warmth, are the foundation of Kashyap’s work. While Sharib Hashmi portrays a kind, encouraging spouse reminiscent of his portrayal of Nalin Dalal in Tarla Dalal’s biography, Sakshi Tanwar displays her incredible skill. The film revolves around the outstanding performances of teenage performers Arista Mehta and Vanshika Taparia. Divya Dutta portrays Kiran Sharma in a complex and captivating way. Even though it makes sense, Saiyami Kher’s song is the poorest in the movie, in part because of her rigid delivery. Sushant Ghadge, who plays Kiran’s housekeeper, Chotu, has some of the funniest lines in the movie, while Ravjeet Singh, who plays Tanvi’s conceited lover, is believable as unlikeable.

Production

The film was announced in August 2021 by Tahira Kashyap Khurrana. The same month saw the start of the main shooting in Chandigarh and Mumbai. Film shooting concluded in November 2022.

Review

Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregate website, has an average rating of 6.1/10, with 73% of the reviews from 11 reviewers being favorable.

Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV rated the film three stars, saying it is a “warm, lively film that is marked by insight, intelligence, and imagination and buoyed by a bunch of flawless performances.”

This is not the type of movie that will leave any of its characters hanging or forlorn, thus Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express awarded it 2.5 out of 5 stars and commented that it’s all extremely appealing even if predictable.

Rediff.com user Sukanya Verma expressed dissatisfaction with the film, writing that while it’s always good to try to normalize menstruation and homosexuality, Sharmajee Ki Beti’s romanticized approach falls flat.

According to Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times, the highlight of Sharmajee Ki Beti is Divya Dutta’s charming portrayal of a housewife setting out on a journey of self-discovery.

It requires some work to watch for the entire nearly two-hour duration, according to Arushi Jain’s assessment in India Today.

Outlook India’s Snigdha Nalini noted that the film is a solid attempt by a first-time director and is, at most, a one-time feel-good viewing.

Mainly, 1.5 out of 5 stars were awarded by Shreyas Pande of The New Indian Express, who stated that the movie mainly highlights certain pre-existing problems that women confront and doesn’t encourage introspection.

“Making a big movie about big things with big characters is easy,” Suparna Sharma of The Week said. Writing subtly about ordinary occurrences is never simple, though.

Dutta’s acting was appreciated by Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in, who said that Dutta is a charming superwoman, despite Kiran’s track being the most difficult and straightforward to answer.

According to Pratikshya Mishra’s positive review from The Quint, which gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, Tahira Kashyap Khurrana left you wanting more.
