Story of the film
Raised in Bombay (now Mumbai) and educated in the United States, Amit is a modern man. He wishes to wed a compatible woman who shares his beliefs and is as educated as he is. In contrast, his parents arrange for him to wed Madhuri, a stunning, wise, and traditional village girl. Amit tries to refuse, but his father insists that he either get married to Madhuri or move out of the house. Amit waits for a chance since he has no other option.
Madhuri resides with her brother Shrikant and her widowed mother. When Shrikant visits Amit’s home before the marriage, Amit’s father mocks him by demanding a dowry in the shape of gold. He acquires phony jewelry since he takes that seriously and believes that the wedding won’t happen if he can’t obtain the gold. Even though the wedding has already happened and Madhuri is now his wife, Amit notices this during the ceremony and uses it as a chance to reject the bride. Madhuri is asked by Amit’s parents to hold off till Amit changes his ways.
However, even a year later, Amit refused to return to take Madhuri to her in-laws’ home. Madhuri attends an interview in hopes of landing a job in Bombay. She is employed despite discovering that Amit is the manager there. She changes her identity to Malathi Choudhury, and Amit doesn’t recognize her because he hasn’t seen her face before. He starts to feel something for Malathi, and she eventually feels the same way. He wants to conceal his marriage from her.
While waiting for Madhuri, Amit’s parents find out about Malathi and attempt to confront her. They want to carry on the game because they recognize Madhuri. When Madhuri’s mother finally tells Amit who Malathi really is, he also acts a little dramatic. Finally, Amit extends an invitation to Madhuri to visit him as his daughter-in-law and begs for forgiveness.
