Imran Khan Biography

Imran Khan (born Imran Pal; January 13, 1983) is an American actor with Indian ancestry who mostly works in Hindi cinema. He is the nephew of actors Aamir Khan and Mansoor Khan, as well as the grandson of filmmaker and producer Nasir Hussain. In the 1988 and 1992 motion pictures Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, he made appearances as a kid artist.

2008 saw Khan make his big screen debut in the critically and commercially successful love comedy Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. He was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for his role in the movie. The media wrote off Khan as a “one-film wonder” following the box office failure of his next two movies. After that, he acted in many highly successful romantic comedies and comedies with a broad appeal, including Delhi Belly (2011), Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (2012), Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011), and I Hate Luv Stories (2010). A string of unsuccessful box office releases and a break came next.

Khan is a social activist in addition to being an actor; he has contributed pieces to the Hindustan Times. He has participated in PETA-organized activities, demonstrating his support for the organization. Since then, he has directed Mission Mars: Keep Walking India (2018), a short documentary.

Early life and background

On January 13, 1983, in Madison, Wisconsin, the United States, Imran Khan was born Imran Pal. His parents are psychologist Nuzhat Khan and software engineer Anil Pal. A Bengali immigrant from Kolkata who wed a British lady was Imran’s grandpa. Bengali Hindu Imran’s father studied under Mansoor Khan at IIT Bombay and is currently employed as a senior manager at Yahoo in California. Imran’s mother is a Muslim from a family in the film industry; she is the sister of filmmaker and producer Mansoor Khan, a cousin of actor Aamir Khan, and the daughter of director and producer Nasir Hussain. Imran Khan was born into American citizenship.

When Khan was still a toddler, his parents had divorced, and his mother then relocated to Mumbai. Khan referred to Raj Zutshi, his stepfather, as the father figure in his formative years in an interview. He attended Bombay Scottish School, where he endured canings and other physical punishments. Khan said that as a result of his incapacity to adjust to his new surroundings and drastically altered family circumstances, he began to stutter, lost academic standing, and had a “strong decline” in his academic career. He also acquired facial tics and became anxious.

His mother chose Blue Mountain School in far-off Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, for him to attend boarding school as it was more convenient that way. Following a depressive phase, Khan adapted and flourished in Coonoor; he subsequently characterized his time there as “phenomenal,” despite his persistently low grades. Khan and a few other pupils followed the school’s principal, who moved to a Gurukul in Ooty’s forests to open his own school. Students had to wash their clothes in a creek, grow some of their own food, and attend a new school without power.Khan subsequently acknowledged that his repeated school transfers had made him both autonomous and a recluse.

After that, Khan relocated to Sunnyvale, California, where he attended Fremont High School and lived with his father. After graduating, he proceeded to Los Angeles to study filmmaking at the New York Film Academy’s Los Angeles branch, with the goal of becoming a film director. Inspired by novelist Roald Dahl, Khan studied directing, writing, and cinematography. He entered the fields of advertising and market research after earning his degree. After a while, he went back to Mumbai to receive training at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting School.

As a child artist, Khan starred as a young Aamir Khan in the movies Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992).

Acting career

2008–10: Debut and breakthrough

After starting his networking while undergoing training at the acting institution, Khan met writer-director Abbas Tyrewala, who extended an offer for the main part in Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (2008). Producer Jhamu Sugandh pitched the script to Aamir Khan, who agreed to fund the movie when they ran into financial difficulties. The romantic comedy was well-received by critics and made 830 million (US$10 million) in revenue globally. Critics commended Khan’s depiction of Jai Singh Rathore (Rats), a young man who rejects violence. “The enterprise belongs to debutant Imran Khan who comes up with an intelligent and restrained performance,” Khalid Mohammed said. He was dubbed “the best young actor” of the age by CNN-IBN’s Rajeev Masand, who also described his performance as “unconventional and vulnerable” and said it left “a lasting impression.”At the 54th Filmfare Awards, Khan shared the Best Male Debut prize with Farhan Akhtar.

Khan appeared in Sanjay Gadhvi’s thriller Kidnap, which was produced by Ashtavinayak head honcho Dhilin Mehta, after Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. In the role of Kabir Devendra Sharma, he was placed opposite Minissha Lamba and Sanjay Dutt as a kidnapper who kidnaps a girl to get revenge on her father. At first, the actor didn’t want to perform the role (referring to it as “tricky and tough”) since he didn’t identify with the character; nonetheless, he said that he couldn’t have done it without Gadhvi’s encouragement and support. Khan spent a year listening to rock and metal music in order to get aggressive for his character. Critics praised his performance even though the movie was a box office bomb. “Imran Khan is effective as the intelligent abductor who’s always two steps ahead of his opponent,” said Gaurav Malani in a review for The Economic Times. The natural actor should, however, be careful with his lip movements, which occasionally look artificial.”Additionally, Kidnap was a commercial flop.

Khan then starred in Soham Shah’s 2009 action film Luck, which was once more produced by Mehta, among an ensemble cast that included Dutt, Shruti Haasan, Mithun Chakraborty, and Danny Denzongpa. Khan played Ram Mehra, an ordinary middle-class man who was desperate for money and would stop at nothing to get it. He said in an interview that he was motivated to sign the movie by the stunts and the “unusual” idea of human betting. He sustained burns to his eyelashes while filming the pivotal sequence. Inspired somewhat by the 2001 Italian film Intacto, it was a box office bust that received unfavorable reviews from reviewers, along with Khan’s performance. Raja Sen of Rediff.com said that the performance was not as charming as his previous ones.

Khan had fewer film opportunities following the box office disaster of Kidnap and Luck until Karan Johar approached him about playing the protagonist in I Hate Luv Stories (2010). Punit Malhotra, a debutante, wrote and directed the romantic comedy in which he played Jay “J” Dhingra, a young Casanova who rejects the idea of passion and love. Critics gave the movie varying degrees of praise, and Khan’s performance was largely praised. Komal Nahta wrote: “For a significant portion of the movie, Imran Khan is charming and performs well.

He still has to work on his emotional situations, though. In the scenes with the light, [He] is charming and free. I Hate Luv Stories made US$9.1 million at the box office both domestically and internationally. Khan conveyed his appreciation to Johar for providing him with the chance. His next role was in the romantic comedy-drama Break Ke Baad, a coming-of-age film directed by Danish Aslam. The film, which was not a huge hit, garnered mixed reviews for both him and his performance. Outlook’s Namrata Joshi called Imran’s acting “earnest,” while Anupama Chopra claimed that Imran was “stuck with a bland, supporting role.”

2011–12: Commercial success

Khan received favorable reviews in 2011 for his performance in the English-language dark comedy Delhi Belly, directed by Abhinay Deo. He was cast as Tashi, a journalist who gets entangled in the pursuit of jewels that he and his roommates, Kunaal Roy Kapur and Vir Das, are erroneously taking. The gems are being smuggled for a criminal leader in Delhi. The movie made over 550 million (US$6.9 million) in domestic income after opening to critical and commercial success. His performance was hailed as “refreshingly good” in a Mid-Day review, while Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India considered it his greatest work to date. Khan stated, “It’s the kind of movie I’ve always wanted to make, and it’s quite unlike anything that Hindi cinema has ever produced. In Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Khan starred, a romantic comedy directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, later that year. With nearly 578 million (US$7.2 million) in domestic revenues, it was a box office triumph with mixed-to-good reviews. Khan portrayed Kush Agnihotri, a guy who develops feelings for Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar, respectively, the brides of his brothers. Critics liked his portrayal; Sonia Chopra of Sify described him as “instantly likable”.

In Shakun Batra’s feature film debut, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (2012), starring Kareena Kapoor, Khan played the stiff architect Rahul Kapoor. Two strangers who got married one night after becoming wasted are the subject of this romantic comedy-drama, which is set in Las Vegas. According to Khan, his persona is “a guy who lives his life according to his parents’ wishes.”Positive reviews were given to the movie and Imran Khan’s performance; Rajeev Masand stated that “Imran Khan doing comfortably into his role”. According to Mumbai Mirror’s Karan Anshuman, “Imran Khan is brilliantly cast and he doesn’t let down.” His body language becomes more relaxed as the screenplay progresses, and his comic timing is flawless.”Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu was a moderate commercial success, bringing in 530 million (US$6.6 million) both domestically and internationally.

2013–2015: Setbacks

Khan starred in three movies in 2013. The first was Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and featuring political satire set in the bucolic environs of a Haryana hamlet. As Pankaj Kapur’s right-hand guy and an educated community organizer named Hukum Singh Matru, Khan costarred alongside Kapur, Anushka Sharma, and Shabana Azmi. He spent three months living in Delhi to be ready for the part, and he studied Act One’s Haryanvi language.

Critics gave the movie—and his performance—mixed reviews, and the final box office profit was low.”Imran Khan goes red in the face trying to muster up a Haryanvi accent and act tough,” Reuters’ Shilpa Jamkhandikar said. It jars all the more because you can truly see how hard he is trying to behave.” At best, Subhash K. Jha called it a respectable attempt. Khan contributed a song to the “Chaar Dina Ki” soundtrack as well.

In Milan Luthria’s historical love drama Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara! (a follow-up to 2010’s Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai), Khan starred with Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha. Mixed reviews were given to the movie and Khan’s gangster persona. Although NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee thought he was unconvincing, Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express stated, “He provides evidence that he can handle a wider range of roles than he is usually allowed to play.”He co-starred with Kareena Kapoor in Punit Malhotra’s romantic comedy Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, which was a critical and financial disaster, later that year.

Khan starred with Kangana Ranaut in the love drama Katti Batti, directed by Nikhil Advani, in 2015. His final release to date, the movie had a mixed reception upon its premiere and proved to be another box office flop for him.

Other works

He made an appearance in 2010 with Tony, his dog, and encouraged the audience to adopt stray dogs rather than purchase purebred pets. After Tony passed away, he kept up his advocacy for adopting animals rather than using them as fashion accessories in his song “Please Adopt.”

Khan and his brother-in-law, Vedant Malik, filed a public-interest litigation (PIL) in 2011 to challenge the Maharashtra state government’s new law that raised the drinking age to 25. “It’s completely unfair to expect that one has to wait till one’s 25 years old to exercise his freedom of choice regarding one’s lifestyle,” he stated in an interview with The Times of India. The younger generation in India is not as careless as the more established elite believes.”He took the ramp in support of Shabana Azmi’s nonprofit, the Mijwan Welfare Society, which works to empower women and girls. He expressed his sense of privilege at having grown up in a household full of powerful women. Khan bought a four-acre plot of property in 2013 with his mother Nuzhat Khan, wife Avantika Malik, and other family members. The purpose of the site is to be turned into an animal refuge with veterinary professionals and personnel to care for the rescued animals until they are adopted.

It was reported in December 2013 that Khan, in collaboration with the well-known comedy group All India Bakchod, will spearhead a campaign to expose ignorance on LGBT matters through a satirical film, in opposition to the newly imposed ban on gay sex in India. Khan stated in an interview with Hindustan Times, “I’ve always been active in the homosexual rights movement. The state of affairs in our nation is sad and hopeless. They are not a minority; these are fundamental human rights that are being denied to individuals. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the absurdity of those who oppose homosexuality.” Several Bollywood celebrities have expressed their disapproval of the law’s return.

It was revealed in 2014 that he has joined other Bollywood and foreign stars in the TeachAids program, a cutting-edge global HIV prevention strategy created at Stanford University.

In March 2009, Khan started writing columns for the Hindustan Times, and he still sometimes contributes to the publication. He has been featured in print and television ads for a number of goods, including Coca-Cola, Levis, MTS India, Maaza, Bru, and Lux.

Personal life

Khan was a year and a half old when his parents got divorced. After thereafter, his mother wed the actor Raj Zutshi; the two separated in 2006. Khan claims that they stayed friendly and that he believed his three parents were there for him. Since his mother reared him alone, he took on his mother’s surname as a memorial to her. The actor resides in the Mumbai neighborhood of Pali Hill with his family.

At the age of 19, Khan started dating Avantika Malik, the niece of Network18 Group founder Raghav Bahl and the daughter of Vandana Malik. Later on, Khan clarified that he did not think it was appropriate to keep their relationship a secret. He gave the examples of Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, and Hrithik Roshan, all of whom got married young and went on to become well-known.On January 16, 2010, the pair got engaged at Avantika’s family’s farmhouse in Karjat, which is close to Navi Mumbai. On January 10, 2011, they tied the knot in a secret civil ceremony at Aamir Khan’s Pali Hill residence, one year later. It was revealed on December 6, 2013, that the couple was expecting their first child. On June 9, 2014, Malik gave birth to a daughter named Imara Malik Khan. The pair began living apart in May 2019, and Avantika moved out of Khan’s house with their kid. After eight years of marriage, the couple decided to divorce owing to irreconcilable disagreements.

In the media, Khan’s uncontroversial lifestyle has given rise to rumors. He stated in an interview that he doesn’t depend on controversies and rumors to remain in the media. The actor also declared that, while not promoting his movies, he would rather avoid the spotlight.

In the media

It has been said that Imran Khan’s lips and eyes are his most distinguishing physical characteristics. The first homosexual magazine to be permitted in India, Bombay Dost, called him a “gay icon” in 2011.He was included as one of “Bollywood’s 11 Best-Dressed Actors” by GQ India the following year.
