Story of the film
Binny, an adolescent girl from London who is troubled, punk, and rebellious, and her grandfather, a traditionalist from a tiny Bihar village, are as different as day and night. They are linked by a significant event in their lives. Can they improve one another’s lives and become friends?
When her traditional Bihari grandparents move in, Binny, a rebellious and free-spirited youngster living in London, is faced with a new obstacle. Conflicts arise from the collision of cultures, and Binny must negotiate the difficulties of family life in the face of generational divides.
Binny and the Har Generation’s Family Kuch Kehta Hai encapsulates the essence of familial love in a sweet, straightforward story that many people can identify with. The conflict between traditional ideals and contemporary lifestyles—or, as it so eloquently states, “Purane zamaane ke sanskaar v/s aajkal ke modern vichaar!”—is a universal issue that the movie touches on. The narrative of the play, which is mainly predictable but nonetheless manages to evoke strong feelings, is clear and simple thanks to director Sanjay Tripathy.
Binny’s (Anjini Dhawan) exciting London life, complete with parties, rebellion, and the usual accouterments of Gen Z freedom, is vividly shown in the first half. Her routine is disturbed by the unexpected visit of her grandparents from Bettiah, Bihar, whose traditional viewpoint imposes limitations that she feels are oppressive. This results in intergenerational conflicts that are both amusing and thought-provoking. The second half of the movie becomes increasingly poignant, particularly following her grandmother’s death. The plot revolves around Binny’s developing relationship with her grandfather, as the two set out on a moving path of mutual understanding and development.
Three main viewpoints are successfully presented in the movie: Binny’s desire for independence, her grandparents’ loyalty to tradition, and her parents’ battle to strike a balance between the two. Lines like “Zindagi ka expiry date ho sakta, but zindagi jeene ka expiry date nahi hota” bring depth and knowledge to the conversations, which flow naturally.
Binny’s journey from a disobedient teenager to someone who starts to adopt her grandparents’ principles is shown by Anjini Dhawan in a self-assured and remarkable debut. Especially in his depiction of loss and sadness, Pankaj Kapur gives an exceptional performance. The film’s emotional center, which is full of nuanced, unsaid emotions, is his interactions with Binny. As Kapur’s compassionate yet strict grandma, Himani Shivpuri is a wonderful match, and their connection gives their Bihari characters a genuine feel. They will make viewers think of their family members because of their peculiarities, such as mending Binny’s torn pants and imposing curfews.
As Binny’s parents, Rajesh Kumar and Charu Shankar deliver believable performances, especially during the poignant scenes where they are trying to settle a dispute between their daughter and her grandparents. As Binny’s brand-obsessed pal Bhavesh, debutante Naman Tripathy provides comedic relief, especially with his obsession with high-end labels.
The film is visually striking, even though some aspects—like the short journey between London and Bihar—veer into comedy territory. Mohit Puri’s cinematography highlights the cultural disparities that the family negotiates by contrasting Bettiah’s simplicity with London’s lively vitality. The film is a seamless, aesthetically beautiful experience thanks to Lalit Pandit’s calming music, which also emphasizes the emotional moments and fits well with the story.
