Story of the film:

Nisha (Smita Patil), an orphan, was brought up with her cousin Indu (Tina Munim) by her adoptive family. As the two cousins reach their twenties, Indu develops feelings for the wealthy and attractive Kabir (Rakesh Roshan). To Indu’s dismay, Kabir falls in love with Nisha and marries her because he wants an obedient and socially conservative bride who will conform to conventional conventions, as opposed to Indu, who is liberal and progressive in her beliefs and actions.

All seemed to be going well for Nisha and Kabir after their marriage, and soon after, Nisha gives birth. Nisha is content and unaware of Kabir’s escapades and liaisons with many ladies when he is pretending to be on business trips.

Upon the insistence of Indu’s mother (Shubha Khote), who believes that Nisha’s pregnancy is complicated, Indu moves into Nisha and Kabir’s home to care for Nisha.

As Nisha’s everyday activities are curtailed, Indu grows closer to Kabir and has an adulterous relationship with him, which rekindles her attraction to him from before. Nisha carries on with her life and eventually gives birth to a girl while being unaware of these new developments.

She is devastated when she returns and learns that her husband and cousin are having an affair. She then confronts Kabir and Indu. Kabir begs her to get used to this shift as he struggles to stop his affair. Nisha declines and departs, leaving their housemaid in charge of her daughter’s duties.

Nisha struggles in the new, predominantly male world and meets Alok (Rajesh Khanna). They rapidly become friends, and Alok starts to feel something for Nisha, but she doesn’t let it distract her from her profession or from her success as an author who writes about her battles with adversity. On the other hand, Kabir and Indu’s relationship stagnates as their financial condition deteriorates and their realisation of their errors is brought on by external factors.

By giving him her future publishing rights and giving the revenues to her marriage and life, Nisha steps in to save Kabir. Kabir expresses regret and apologises profusely, prompting Nisha to say that she has moved on from her life and does not want her daughter to know who her mother is because of the suffering she would experience if she learns of her mother’s fate.

Alok meets with Nisha after their daughter gets married and informs her that it’s time to legally recognise their relationship. Alok challenges Nisha with the question “Akhir Kyon?” as she continues to maintain to her old ideals while resisting. (Why So?) arguing that since society rejected her when she was experiencing marriage problems, she shouldn’t worry about it. Thus, “Why So?” Alok applies sindoor to her and legally establishes their partnership.
