Story of The Film

Tony (Govinda) is a friendly and well-liked tour guide. He is informed by a fortune teller one day that a blue-eyed princess from another country will enter his life and forever alter it. She is the ideal woman he has been seeking.

Sonia (Aishwarya Rai) and her nanny (Maya Alagh) stop in Mumbai on their route from Austria to a planned vacation in Singapore. When their connecting flight is delayed, Sonia decides to go to Malaga, the birthplace of her mother, who passed away when Sonia was quite little. Malaga is supposed to be close to Goa. Since her mother mysteriously left the family to go back to Malaga, Sonia has been raised by her father (the Austrian Ambassador), Saeed Jaffrey.

Sonia wants to visit her mother’s cemetery for the first time, even though she is aware that her father will be furious with her because he despises India and Indians because his wife left him. She persuades her father to grant her request to spend a few days in Malaga.

Sonia meets Tony in Malaga and pays him to show her around and assist her in locating her mother’s grave. As Sonia and Tony tour Goa’s attractions and locate her mother’s tomb, Tony starts to fall for Sonia, and it seems like she feels the same way.

Unbeknownst to Tony, Neena (Namrata Shirodkar), a childhood acquaintance, is in love with him and does not appreciate him spending all of his time with Sonia.

Sonia notices a man in the distance one day as she and Tony are travelling. Prem Arya (Jackie Shroff), an Indian journalist whom Sonia met in Austria while he was interviewing her father, is revealed in flashbacks to be the man. Prem and Sonia grew close as friends before falling in love and wishing to wed. They agreed to split even though they are passionately in love because Sonia’s father banned them from getting married because Prem is Indian.

When Sonia returns to the present, she is surprised to learn that Prem is in Malaga. She invites Tony to arrange a lunch under the guise of meeting Prem, who she learns has written an article about Tony and with whom she has a close friendship, after she discovers that Prem is the author of the article. In the meeting, Prem consents but is astonished to see Sonia. Sonia tells Prem that she is still in love with him and is sorry for having to leave him in order to please her father while Tony goes to get lunch.

Prem, overtaken with emotion, informs her that there is no use in feeling this way because there is nothing either of them can do to change the situation. Tony is obviously perplexed when Sonia declares that she wants to depart as well when he returns from buying lunch.

Prem calls Sonia the following day to confess his continued love for her and inability to stop thinking about her. After one outing with Prem, they start spending time together, and Sonia tells her nanny that Prem is still the love of her life and that she thinks the world of him. When Tony hears this, he assumes Sonia is talking about her affections for him.

On another occasion, Tony and Neena travel with Prem and Sonia. Sonia tries to inform Tony that Neena loves him because it is clear to both Prem and Sonia that she does. Tony misinterprets Sonia’s remarks and, when combined with what he has already heard, thinks that she is expressing her love for him.

As Sonia and Prem spend time together, Sonia understands that being with Prem is where she truly finds satisfaction. Sadly, when Sonia’s father visits Malaga to surprise her, he learns that Sonia has been seeing Prem once more. He doesn’t think it was a coincidence; he thinks she went to Malaga on purpose to see Prem.

He is distraught when Sonia informs Tony that she would be going back to Austria. Tony accepts Sonia’s invitation to travel with her to Austria. Neena is furious, but Tony assumes that she is unhappy because he is leaving her in Malaga by herself. He tells her that he will find employment for her once he is settled in Austria and then gleefully resumes packing in preparation for his trip.

A priest greets Sonia on her final visit to the grave and explains the real reason her mother returned to Malaga. Tony greets her at the airport and informs her that he will no longer accompany her to Austria. He has found a note that Neena left for him that expresses her emotions and wishes him happiness in his new life. He admits to Sonia that he knows she loves him and that she also loves him, but he also understands that Neena depends on him and cannot survive without him. He will have to sacrifice Neena in order to fulfil his desire to be with Sonia, and he is not willing to do this.

Sonia tries to tell Tony that she doesn’t love him, but he swiftly leaves since he doesn’t want a sombre goodbye. Sonia supports Tony and informs her father of his sacrifice after her father makes disparaging remarks about Indians and Tony’s decision to stay away from them. After witnessing this sacrifice, Sonia comes to the realisation that she cannot abandon Prem in order to appease her father, and she asks him to allow them to wed. When Sonia discloses the truth—that her mother was diagnosed with a contagious illness and made the sacrifice to leave the two of them and die alone in India so that they would not get sick—her father continues to reject her and continues to make disparaging remarks about Indians and her mother.

When her mother’s unfinished letters are given to her father, he apologises to Sonia and instructs her to visit Prem.

Tony spots Sonia at a different table with Prem while he and Neena are enjoying their meal in a restaurant. Tony thinks Sonia stayed in Malaga because she wanted to be close to him. Tony observes that despite the fact that Sonia appears dejected and pallid, she will eventually move over her affections for him. Sonia wants to make it clear to Tony that she never had affections for him while they are at their table that they should thank him for bringing them together. Prem agrees.

Prem interrupts her and tells her that some dreams are too lovely to be destroyed, and that it would be better for Tony to think that he traded a princess for a regular girl.

Albela Movie Review :

This film review are Mostly Positive from Critics, IMDB Public Reviewing site give 3.7 Star Out Of 10 Star with Reviewers are 700.

What’s the only reason why I can rationalize why Aishwarya Rai would have chosen to star in this film. If she had done this earlier on in her acting career, it would have been understandable that she was trying to open doors for herself, but this film was in 2001! Come on Aishu! why? why? why? I have selected the “Non-spoiler” button so I will not say anymore. All I can do is warn you to see this film, only if you are a die-hard fan of Aishwarya or Govinda. A quick synopsis: Aishwarya plays a rich kid who goes on holiday somewhere in Asia or Europe(I can’t remember where exactly), and Govinda plays a “happy go lucky” Albela(tour guide) she meets there.

Critics Rating  by Taran Adarsh, from Bollywood Hungama give 3 star out of 5 Star.
