Controversy
Upon receiving a complaint from the Sikh Talmel Committee for offending religious emotion when the lead actor Meezaan Jafri was depicted in the song “Saure Ghar” sporting a kirpan, a First Information Report (FIR, a type of police complaint) was filed against the film’s producers. One of the five holy symbols (kakaars) that every baptised Sikh wears on his person is a kirpan. A non-Sikh or unbaptized Sikh is not allowed to wear a kirpan, per the Sikh code of conduct (Jafri is a Muslim). When the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) filed a complaint against the production company T-Series, the directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, and the actor Meezaan Jafri, the movie became embroiled in yet another controversy.
Under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code, the Amritsar Police filed the FIR at the E Division Police Station in an effort to deliberately stir up religious feelings among the Sikh populations.
The actor and the film’s creators removed the sequences after apologising for unintentionally offending any religious emotions and stating that Jafri was actually carrying a Khukri, a small weapon with no religious significance that resembles a kirpan but has no religious value.
