Story of the film
When “Woh Bhi Din The” was made, the dynamic team of John Abraham and Shoojit Sircar was working on avant-garde films that were pushing the frontiers of cinema. The picture is now in the spotlight after spending over ten years in the cans. Its entertainment appeal is enough to keep spectators interested despite its apparent shortcomings. The movie, which is set in Jamshedpur, is accurate, with performances that seem real and in line with the local culture. The story is skillfully told, combining the hardships of school life with adolescent passion. Its potential is diminished by uneven writing, which turns what could have been a great movie into a mediocre one.
Rahul Sinha (John Abraham), a renowned journalist now, returns to his former institution to get recognition at the beginning of the movie. After the ceremony, he is walking the hallways when he sees four pupils being reprimanded outside the principal’s office. Rahul is transported back in time to his school days during a talk with them. Rahul Sinha (Rohit Saraf) and his close buddy Joy Ganguly (Adarsh Gourav) are shown in the flashback as being close friends who belong to a group that places a high value on hedonism. They spend their days smoking, viewing sexual movies at a classmate’s residence, and engaging in activities that are prohibited inside the school’s boundaries because they value pleasure over education. When Rahul falls in love with Shalini (Charu Bedi), his entire world changes, and Joy helps their companionship. But when another lady, Milky (Sanjana Sanghi), starts to feel something for Rahul, things get complicated, and the buddies start to argue. Their once-unbreakable friendship is strained over time by these amorous entanglements. Rahul starts to reevaluate his priorities after seeing the results of his actions.
Imtiaz Ali’s brother, Sajid Ali, makes his directorial debut with this movie, which suggests he has a knack for the camera. It is clear from this movie, which was shot ten years ago, that his skill was not yet completely developed. Even if some sequences are flawless, others show how inexperienced he is. Sajid is successful in accurately conveying the ambiance, mannerisms, local dialect, and small-town school life. The performances fit the scene perfectly. However, in spite of these advantages, the movie is inconsistent at times, coming across as rough and unpolished. The plot spends a lot of time on Rahul’s pursuit of Shalini and Milky, mostly ignoring the possible drama in the family and school dynamics that may have given the narrative more nuance. Despite being documented, these instances are scattered across the movie and not adequately examined.
Rahul Sinha is portrayed by Rohit Saraf with remarkable proficiency, showcasing his ability to depict emotions and facial expressions believably despite his youth. He does a good job of capturing the ambivalent character of a schoolchild. As Milky, a direct figure who never holds back, Sanjana Sanghi gives an honest portrayal. But it is Adarsh Gourav, who plays Joy Ganguly, who steals the show with his effortless performance. In this picture as well as his previous work in a number of other films and television shows, Gourav’s portrayal demonstrates a surprising maturity. John Abraham briefly appears as the elder Rahul Sinha, lending the movie the star power it needs to increase its appeal.
