Story of the film
A young girl takes on the task of bringing freedom fighters together by starting an underground radio station to close the communication gap during the height of Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India movement.
Ae Watan Mere Watan illuminates a little-known story from India’s independence movement, one that was crucial in changing the course of the country’s independence movement after Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India campaign. With its depiction of the period and its rich art design, which effectively conveys the spirit of the nation at the time, this biographical drama captivates viewers. But at its heart, it is more of a thriller, with the main character trying to protect the underground radio station while avoiding being apprehended by the British government. This idea offers many adrenaline-pumping moments, but the filmmakers are unable to fully utilize this potential. Sadly, the movie skips over this exciting part, leaving audiences wanting more for a deeper examination of its compelling aspects.
The plot of ‘Ae Watan Mere Watan’ is based on a true event and centers on the brave deeds of Usha Mehta (Sara Ali Khan), who, at a young age, chose chastity and sacrificed herself for India’s independence. The movie starts in Surat in 1930 and moves to Mumbai in 1942, when Usha’s father becomes a judge in British India. Usha’s obvious contempt for the British Empire is shown in a moment where her father displays the automobile that the British gave her. Motivated by Mahatma Gandhi’s principles, by joining the Congress, Usha and her group of friends promise to support the liberation fight. They became aware of the communication gap amongst the freedom fighters after joining Congress, and they understood how urgent it was to speed up India’s independence. Usha bridges the gap between the freedom fighters by establishing an underground radio station with the help of Firdaus Engineer (Anand Tiwari). People like Ram Manohar Lohia (Emraan Hashmi) encourage her in her efforts to promote India’s freedom. A high-stakes game of cat and mouse breaks out when the British police learn of their scheme.
Sara Ali Khan does a good job portraying Usha Mehta, although she does not go very far. Considering its historical significance in the fight for independence, it is a difficult character. Some of the sequences are rather powerful, especially the ones where Usha interacts with Kaushik and her father, yet none of them have had a significant emotional impact. In the movie, Sara’s performance seems limited, which keeps them from reaching their full potential. The task of capturing Usha and shutting down the radio station is given to the enemy, John Lyre (Alexx O’Nell).
His constant sour attitude, meanwhile, does not give the character any nuance. Not every actor can become an expert at using body language and facial expressions to communicate effectively. Emraan Hashmi’s performance as Ram Manohar Lohia and Sparsh Srivastav as Fahad are doing great work in the movie. Emraan Hashmi’s depiction of Ram Manohar Lohia enhances his already remarkable range as an actor, while Sparsh’s portrayal of intensity is genuine.

Review
Ae Watan Mere Watan is a compelling story, but it does not quite live up to its full excitement potential. It brings back memories of the recently streaming series ‘All the Lights We Cannot See,’ which starred Aria Mia Loberti, Hugh Laurie, and Mark Ruffalo. The watching experience would have been substantially improved had the movie evoked the same degree of enthusiasm as the series. This historical drama avoids unnecessary extravagance and remains faithful to its subject, although it might have done more.
An unwritten part of Indian history is shown in Ae Watan Mere Watan, which is worth seeing, according to a Bollywood Hungama critic who rated it three stars out of five.
Rediff.com user Sukanya Verma rated Ae Watan Mere Watan three out of five stars, noting that it attempts to influence young people’s thoughts through the words of inspirational leaders who are dedicated to the cause of an independent India. It is noteworthy because their backing is founded on leadership that invites inquiry rather than andh bhakti (blind devotion).
According to Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV, who gave the movie a 2.5 out of 5, Ae Watan Mere Watan communicates its ideas plainly and concisely. Although it delivers a compelling story, the film falls well short of being consistently captivating or memorable due to its storytelling approach. Sara Ali Khan, who plays the main character, is way too porcelain and dainty to convey the remarkably doughty woman’s fierce determination,” he said in his critique of the lead performance.
India Today’s Zinia Bandyopadhyay gave 2 out of 5 stars, stating that although the tale has the potential to be powerful, it is buried in a drab script.
Lachmi from Firstpost Ae Watan Mere Watan failed to give us the chills that a liberation film usually provides, according to Deb Roy’s assessment, which gave it a 2/5 rating. However, the film was able to blend the independence struggle with enough personal tales demonstrating Usha’s role in the Quit India campaign.
Indian Express’s Shubhra Gupta referred to the movie as a boring haze. She gave the movie a bad review, saying that Sara Ali Khan did not make much of an impression and that nothing about this historical drama deviated from the formula. But she praised Sparsh Srivastav’s portrayal as a teenage independence warrior who had contracted polio and referred to him as the breakthrough star.
