Rajeev Masand, writing about News18, noted that Jhanvi Kapoor had “a fragility that makes her extremely charming, and a deep quality that makes it hard to keep the focus on her on screen, In addition, he felt that the movie was not as good as the original and questioned why caste-based themes had been removed. On the other hand, Firstpost’s Anna M. M. Vetticad felt that she “lacks character and gives a colourless portrayal”. The Zee Cine Award for Best Female  Actress Debut was given to her.

In 2020, Jhanvi Kapoor made her next appearance on screen in the Netflix horror anthology film Ghost Stories, where she acted with Zoya Akhtar. Although Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express thought the parts were bad, she also said that Janhvi Kapoor’s “solid, real act” was the “only real surprise.” Then, she portrayed aviator Gunjan Saxena in the biographical film Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, which was directly released on Netflix streams instead of going to theaters due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

She spent time with Saxena getting ready, training physically, and studying Air Force officer body language. Jhanvi’s role was stated as “passably steady” by Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV, but Rahul Desai of Film Companion was highly appreciated for her “deceptively private” and “pitch-perfect” execution. She was put forward for the Best Actress Filmfare Award.

In the comedic horror movie Roohi in 2021, Jhanvi costarred with Rajkummar Rao in a dual role. After multiple postponements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic’s second wave, the movie was finally released in theaters. The movie received harsh criticism from critics, and Janhvi’s performance suffered at the box office. The next year, Janhvi acted in Aanand L. Rai’s Good Luck Jerry, an adaptation of the Tamil film Kolamaavu Kokila from 2018. It was released on Disney+ Hotstar app. She portrayed a young woman caught in a freezer in her next movie, Mili, which was a remake of the Malayalam classic Helen. Anna Ben played the same role in the original.

Although Anupama Chopra appreciated the “sweetness and sincerity” she gave to the role, she thought Ben’s portrayal was far more polished. It ended to be a box office failure. She was nominated for Best Actress at Filmfare once again.

In Nitesh Tiwari’s romance drama Bawaal (2023), Janhvi Kapoor featured with Varun Dhawan as a disputing couple who discovers information about World War II while traveling through Europe. Digitally, it was made available on Amazon Prime Video. The film also criticized mainly for downplaying the Holocaust.

Beatrice Loayza, a writer for The New York Times, criticized Janhvi Kapoor as “devoid of charisma” and criticized the starring pair’s lack of chemistry. While criticizing the movie and their chemistry, Leaf Arbuthnot of The Guardian praised her for her “still, mature performance”.

In 2024, Janhvi starred WITH Rajkummar Rao in the sports drama movie Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, which tells the story of a man who uses his wife’s talent to try and live up to his dreams of becoming a professional cricket player. While shooting clips involving cricket, Janhvi had two dislocations of her shoulder. Despite making nine film appearances, Shilajit Mishra, a writer for The Hindu, believed that Janhvi had not yet achieved the “necessary ease in acting”. Worldwide, the film brought around ₹51.40 crore. She will play a lead role as a young Indian Foreign Service officer in the political thriller movie Ulajh. She will also be starring with N. T. Rama Rao Jr. in Koratala Siva’s Telugu action movie Devara.
