Story of the film
Amar (Sunny Singh), a young guy still struggling with his sexuality, falls profoundly in love with Prem (Aditya Seal), who understands him in ways he never expected. As their romance progresses, they envision a future free of societal censure and familial expectations. Will his family embrace his reality, or will they push him to follow conventional rules by accepting an arranged marriage?
Following the popularity of progressive films such as Badhaai Do, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Amar Prem Ki Prem Kahani adopts a similar approach by daring to examine the complexity of gay love within the constraints of social expectations. The film, directed by Hardik Gajjar, adopts a lighthearted approach to Amar’s path of self-discovery and acceptance while navigating familial and cultural constraints.
The plot revolves around Amar (played by Sunny Singh), a young guy who is still struggling with his sexuality. When he travels to London, he suddenly falls in love with Prem (Aditya Seal), and they both envision a future in which they may live freely. However, issues develop when Amar goes home and is forced into an arranged marriage, causing misunderstandings, family turmoil, and cultural strife.
At its core, Amar Prem Ki Prem Kahani aims to offer a sympathetic portrayal of a same-sex relationship in a mainstream setting. However, the film’s potential is reduced by an overemphasis on cultural disputes, notably between the characters’ Bengali and Punjabi families, making the story appear more like a chaotic family drama than a sophisticated investigation of LGBT identity. The second part of the picture devolves into what feels like a louder, more exaggerated version of 2 States, with the pre-climactic fight between the two families hanging on indefinitely.
While the film begins brightly, concentrating on Amar’s internal turmoil and growing relationship with Prem, it quickly loses sight of its main issue. Cultural disputes dominate the story, overshadowing the sensitive emotional beats of the characters’ relationships. This change from a homosexual romance to a slapstick family comedy detracts from the story’s potential to be a far more profound message on LGBTQ+ acceptance.
Sunny Singh and Aditya Seal provide outstanding performances, and the relationship between their characters serves as the film’s emotional backbone. Singh shines as Amar, capturing the fragility of a guy struggling to reconcile his identity with the demands of his orthodox family. Seal’s Prem, on the other hand, is confident and supportive, a wonderful contrast to Amar’s hesitation. The two performers keep viewers interested even when the screenplay falters, and their on-screen friendship feels real and emotional. Even though the movie is mostly about men, Pranutan Bahl and Diksha J Singh, two secondary characters, have a big influence.
