Story of the film
As a penalty from the court for driving while intoxicated, Gulshan Arora, a once-promising but now disillusioned assistant basketball coach, finds his career taking an unexpected turn when he is tasked with training a squad of basketball players with intellectual disabilities. At first, Gulshan finds the job extremely difficult and finds it difficult to relate to his new team because of their particular circumstances and demands. He frequently feels overburdened by the duty, and his patience is put to the test.
Gulshan reluctantly joins the team and gradually gets to comprehend each member’s unique challenges and strengths. When he assists one of the players, Guddu, in overcoming his crippling dread of bathing—a phobia that has caused him great distress—it marks a major turning point in his teaching style. Golu Khan, a vibrant new member, joins the team during this time, and his contagious energy significantly uplifts the group’s mood and dynamic.
The team’s commitment and spirit endure despite the many obstacles. They qualify for a major basketball tournament in Mumbai as a result of their hard work. Gulshan also experiences a period of personal development during the trip to the metropolis. While travelling, he faces and eventually conquers his own lifting phobia, a personal struggle he had previously shied away from. When Gulshan arrives in Mumbai, he is shocked to learn that his mother has a sexual relationship with their family chef. This revelation causes him great distress and complicates his work obligations.
Finally, the eagerly awaited competition is here. In the end, the team loses the final game despite its best efforts and revitalised confidence. But the result doesn’t make them feel any worse. The players and Gulshan celebrate their adventure, their progress, and the relationships they have formed rather than giving up. In a flash of insight, Gulshan realises that although he thought he was coaching them, the players had actually been his real instructors, giving him priceless lessons about joy, acceptance, and resilience.
The film ends on a touching note as Gulshan, who had previously been reluctant to create a family, welcomes the news that his wife, Sunita, is expecting their first child, signifying his total metamorphosis and newly discovered preparedness for parenthood.
Production
The Aderes basketball team in Burjassot, Valencia, which was founded for individuals with intellectual disabilities and won twelve Spanish titles between 1999 and 2014, as well as the real-life tale of American basketball coach Ron Jones, served as inspiration for the 2018 Spanish film Champions. Jones was sentenced to community service as the head coach of a basketball team for the intellectually disabled after being found guilty of driving while intoxicated in the 1980s. The narrative was later published by Jones as B-Ball: The Team that Never Lost a Game (1990), and Stuart Cooper turned it into the television movie One Special Victory in 1991.
Genelia Deshmukh, who previously starred in Khan’s production of the 2008 smash Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na, which marked his nephew Imran’s debut, was announced in October 2023 to co-star with Aamir Khan in Sitaare Zameen Par, marking their first acting partnership. In February 2024, principal photography got underway. Mumbai was the first location to film, then New Delhi, and finally Vadodara. June 2024 marked the conclusion of filming.
Music/Songs
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who also wrote the music for Taare Zameen Par, composed the soundtrack for Sitaare Zameen Par, which was distributed and released by Zed Music Company. Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote the words, taking Prasoon Joshi’s place. However, AKP regular Ram Sampath wrote the background score. On May 22, 2025, the debut single “Good for Nothing” was made available. On May 29, 2025, “Sar Aankhon Pe Mere” became the second single.
Release
Theatrical
The producers declared on May 5, 2025, that the movie would be released on June 20, 2025, along with dubbed versions in Telugu and Tamil. The Multiplex Association of India applauded Khan’s later announcement that the movie would only be available in theatres and not on any streaming sites.
Additionally, Khan declined to alter the movie in two ways that the Central Board of Film Certification recommended. After five modifications, including the inclusion of a quotation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the opening disclaimer, it was ultimately approved with a UA13+ grade. Additionally, it was the first movie to concurrently incorporate all of the main accessibility features, such as audio description, closed captions, and Indian sign language.
Home media
Following the film’s theatrical run, Khan revealed at a press conference that it would not be released on over-the-top platforms (OTT) but would instead launch straight on YouTube on August 1, 2025, for? 100 in India. Additionally, localised pricing was made accessible for viewing in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, and Spain. After lying about the digital distribution, Khan eventually issued an apology, which elicited conflicting reactions. Following its original pay-per-view release on YouTube, it was later revealed that the movie would also be available for streaming on SonyLIV.

With a rating of four stars out of five, Devesh Sharma of Filmfare remarked, “This is a film that teaches while it entertains without ever being preachy.” It serves as a mirror for society and encourages us to be more welcoming, compassionate, and kind. It should be observed, honoured, and remembered for that reason alone.
According to Deepa Gahlot, who wrote for Scroll. In, the movie is straightforward but well-meaning and frequently touching. The message is reiterated, followed by some.

In Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan abandons the halo and adopts humility, allowing the true stars—his neurodivergent team—to shine brightest, according to Aishwarya Vasudevan of OTT Play, who gave it 3 out of 5.
