Story of the film
In the first scene of the narrative, Rajat Verma (Rajesh Khanna) is accused of killing Sheetal Puri (Priti Sapru). This is the moment when Mukta (Smita Patil) enters the witness box and recalls the entire narrative.
Rajat oversaw music compositions. He meets Mukta, a dancer, and they get hitched. But Mukta’s father forbids her from being married to Rajat, so Mukta flees to get married to Rajat on a registry. After Rajat and Mukta get married, everything seems perfect for a while. It has been discovered, though, that Mukta is sterile.
Subsequently, Rajat joins a prestigious advertising agency as head of music composition. Up-and-coming model Sheetal will do whatever it takes to get to the top and stay there. Rajat even receives advances from her, but he turns them all down. Mukta teaches her how to dance, while Rajat composes the music so she can perform professionally in commercials.
In the meantime, Mukta and Rajat live with a housemaid. It is revealed that some seven years earlier, Mukta intervened when the housemaid’s husband attempted to sell off his 10-year-old daughter Tulsi, choosing instead to cover Tulsi’s educational costs.
Tulsi disguises her skin tone to fit in with the slums when she returns to the hamlet. But Tulsi is really quite lovely. Tulsi subsequently makes the decision to work as a housemaid in Rajat and Mukta’s home.
Rajat chooses not to work with Sheetal because she disparaged his wife, but Tulsi unexpectedly becomes unwell and takes a temporary job as a housemaid at Rajat’s residence. Sheetal’s contract with Rajat’s company is terminated. Shailendra Inamdaarp’s company suffers enormous financial losses as a result of Sheetal’s rise to fame and the dearth of models prepared to fill her void.
But one day, while Mukta is abroad, Rajat realizes he can use Tulsi in place of Sheetal to perform Shafi Inamdar’s play. Tulsi’s portfolio will soon be ready.
Rajat’s car breaks down in the rain while returning from Tulsi’s launch party, so Tulsi decides to change her clothes in Rajat’s house. But when he sees Tulsi dressed as his wife, he becomes ecstatic and has sex with her. When Mukta arrives home the following day, she dismisses Tulsi since she knows what happened between Rajat and Tulsi the day before.
But Sheetal isn’t thrilled since she’s getting more and more attention and power. In an attempt to ruin Mukta’s marriage, she begins circulating untrue rumors that she and Rajat had an affair. Sheetal brings Rajat home while he is seen intoxicated on the street and phones Mukta to let her know that Rajat spent the entire night with her.
Mukta finds the rumors upsetting. In an attempt to calm her down, Rajat says that he and Sheetal are not having any sexual relations. On the other hand, Mukta’s mistrust and resentment toward Rajat intensify daily. At last, Rajat gives up too, unable to bear any more of this. Rajat says he’s prepared to sign the documents pertaining to the divorce.
Rajat’s situation worsens from then on. He begins abusing alcohol to the point that he makes headlines for the wrong reasons.
In the meantime, Mukta finds out that Tulsi is carrying Rajat’s child, and the housemaid perishes as a result of Tulsi’s unmarried pregnancy being ridiculed by the slum inhabitants. Mukta makes an effort to make amends, but Sheetal icy tells her that she has lost Rajat to her forever, regardless of the circumstances. Sheetal also fabricates a story to claim that she needs Mukta’s signature for Rajat to file for divorce from Mukta.
When Mukta finds out that Rajat wants to divorce her and leaves her, she withdraws within herself. Tulsi makes the decision to become pregnant, gives the child to Mukta, and propagates the myth that Mukta is the parent of the child.
When Sheetal finds out that Mukta is pregnant, she makes sure Rajat never finds out.
Rajat’s housemaid, Tulsi (Sridevi), witnesses everything. Even when Rajat fumbles more into the chaos, she feels powerless. She has no idea that she will be the pivotal character in the remaining parts of the narrative.
In a state of complete despair, Rajat chooses to introduce Tulsi as a new model. Tulsi is forced to accept his choice because she has none else. After Rajat changes Tulsi, the herb actually begins to gain traction in the market. Naturally, Sheetal is furious at this unforeseen obstacle.
The remainder of the narrative focuses on how Tulsi’s arrival further impacts Mukta and Rajat’s relationship. Will Rajat win Tulsi over with his love? Is Tulsi going to wed Rajat? Will Mukta ever discover Rajat wasn’t guilty? Is Sheetal going to ruin Mukta’s life any more? When will Mukta and Rajat be able to make amends? What brought them all before the judge?
