Story of the film
On his birthday in Varanasi, an old man suffering from dementia is left alone by his sons. When he meets a small-time criminal, he has a dramatic impact on both the criminal’s life and the lives of others around them.
Director Anil Sharma, who started his career in the early 1980s with films like “Shradhanjali” and “Bandhan Kuchchey Dhaagon Ke,” which addressed societal concerns of the day, is making a comeback to social dramas with “Vanvaas.” With “Vanvaas,” a film with a socially important premise and sincere aim, Sharma returns to the genre after a protracted break. But its too dramatic tone and 160-minute duration weaken what could have been a compelling story.
With themes of parental desertion, dementia, and redemption via a ruffian with a golden heart, the narrative feels like it belongs in the 1980s but lacks the originality to make it stand out. Even if “Vanvaas” is still worth seeing, it might have been a more interesting film with better editing.
The narrative centers on Nana Patekar’s character, Deepak Tyagi, a retired father who has a tranquil life with his three kids and their spouses. He suffers from early-onset dementia and frequently thinks back on his late wife, Vimala Tyagi (Khushboo), whom he adored. But his family finds his idealistic outlook and frequent revisions annoying. They decide to celebrate his birthday in Varanasi and leave him at an assisted living facility because they are fed up with his actions. The family chooses to drop him off in one of the ghats after being asked for identification documents at the house. Deepak, who has no recollection of his homeland or family, starts a desperate hunt for his boys, whom he recalls as kids, because he thinks they are gone. He meets Veeru (Utkarsh Sharma), a small-time robber, along the road, and their odd relationship alters Veeru and everyone around him in significant ways.
Nana Patekar’s powerful performance is a major factor in this social drama’s captivating appeal. Patekar’s portrayal of a retired man suffering from dementia is a powerful performance that adds realism and nuance to the agony of having been abandoned by his own sons. He completely inhabits the role, is in practically every scene, and commands the majority of the screen. Although his erratic Banarasi dialect undermines the believability, Utkarsh Sharma’s portrayal of Veeru is genuine and gets better with every movie. Rajpal Yadav and Ashwini Kalsekar give strong support and perform their roles well, while Simratt Kaur plays Meena in a limited supporting role that is limited.
Despite addressing a significant topic, “Vanvaas” mostly uses a didactic tone to convey its point. BR Ambedkar and Karl Marx are frequently mentioned in Nana Patekar’s conversations; however, they often meander into too moralistic territory that may get boring. Melodramatic and overstretched, the movie features mediocre tunes that do not make an impression. But Kabir Lal’s cinematography brilliantly conveys Varanasi’s spirit. A narrative gap results from the sons’ decision to forsake their father, which is not sufficiently explored. The character’s helplessness evokes empathy and makes you feel sad.
“It does not provide the same emotional release as movies like Bagban.” Although director Anil Sharma has good intentions, the film’s execution falls short of expectations and lacks the incisiveness necessary to make an impact.
