Tiger Shroff is an Indian actor, dancer, and martial artist known for his work in Bollywood films. Born on March 2, 1990, as Jai Hemant Shroff, he made his acting debut in the 2014 film “Heropanti,” which earned him widespread recognition and a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut nomination.
His acting debut came in the 2014 action-romantic film Heropanti, for which he received the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Male. He was born to actors Jackie Shroff and Ayesha Dutt. Shroff later became known as an action star after starring in the financially successful movies Baaghi (2016), Baaghi 2 (2018), and War (2019).
Shroff was a co-founder of Matrix Fight Night (MFN), a mixed martial arts organization, in 2019. In both 2018 and 2019, he was listed in Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list. He has put out a number of singles as a singer.
Life and Background
On March 2, 1990, Indian film actor Jackie Shroff and his spouse Ayesha Shroff (née Dutt) welcomed Jai Hemant Shroff into the world. His younger sister’s name is Krishna Shroff. He is of Turkmen and Gujarati descent on his father’s side and Belgian and Bengali on his mother’s side. Air Vice Marshal Ranjan Dutt, a recipient of the Vir Chakra, was his maternal grandfather.
Shroff, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva in Hinduism, has compared his physical appearance to Shiva. He fasts on Mondays and observes the Mahashivaratri festival. He was a student at Bombay’s American School.
Owing to his martial arts background, he has often assisted other actors with their film preparation. In 2014, he was awarded an honorary fifth-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
Career of Tiger Shroff:
Early work and established action star (2012–2020)
Producer Sajid Nadiadwala signed Shroff in 2012 with the intention of having him star in Sabbir Khan’s action romantic comedy Heropanti. Under Ziley Mawai, he received flexibility training in order to get ready for the role. Heropanti, which debuted in 2014, grossed ₹780 million (US$9.8 million) globally, making it a commercial success.
He received acclaim for his physical characteristics action sequences, dance-ability, and stunt performance abilities, but criticism for his acting, look, and dialogue delivery. Subhash K. stated that the man “emotes, he dances, and yes, he can fight.
His “dialogues forced,” according to Sweta Kaushal of Hindustan Times, who disagreed and claimed that “his expressions do nothing in a given situation.” Even though Kaushal thought his performance was “a little unconvincing,” he still praised his action sequences and called him a “great dancer.” As a result of his performance, Shroff won the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Male and the Screen Award for Best Male Debut. He was also nominated for a 60th Filmfare Award in the same category.
In Baaghi (2016), which was filmed in front of a martial arts school and starred Sudheer Babu and Shraddha Kapoor, Shroff reteamed with Nadiadwala and Sabbir. Baaghi was also successful, making ₹1.29 billion (US$16 million) in international markets. Alongside Jacqueline Fernandez, he portrayed a martial arts instructor who acquires superpowers in Remo D’Souza’s superhero movie A Flying Jatt that same year. For the third time, Shroff and Sabbir collaborated in the dance movie Munna Michael in 2017. Munna Michael and A Flying Jatt did not do well at the box office.
With Ahmed Khan’s Baaghi 2, a spiritual follow-up to Baaghi and the second film in the Baaghi Film Series, which starred Disha Patani, Shroff made a name for himself in the industry in 2018. Nadiadwala produced the film, which portrayed him as a rebellious army officer on a quest to locate the daughter of his ex-girlfriend. Overachieving its initial projections, Baaghi 2 became one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of the year with a net domestic gross of ₹1.65 billion (US$21 million) in India and over ₹2.58 billion (US$32 million) globally.
2019 saw Shroff make his mainstream romantic drama debut in Punit Malhotra’s teen drama Student of the Year 2. Shroff played a college student who participates in an annual school championship in this stand-alone sequel to Student of the Year, which was produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. His performance was described as “the film’s singular strength” by News18’s Rajeev Masand. The Times of India’s Ronak Kotecha concurred, stating that “Tiger Shroff pretty much carries the film on his well-toned shoulders”.Alongside Hrithik Roshan, Shroff starred in Siddharth Anand’s action thriller War in 2019. One of Tiger Shroff’s biggest blockbuster movies of his career, the movie was also the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year and at the time, Shroff’s highest-grossing release.
4.76 billion Indian rupees (US$63 million) were raised globally for the War effort, with 3.18 billion Indian rupees (net) raised domestically in India. War broke all previous records by earning more than 53.35 crore Indian Rupees on its first day of release, more than any other Bollywood film in India. As a result of its enormous box office success, the movie broke records as the highest-grossing Bollywood Indian film of 2019 and among the highest-grossing Indian films ever.
He starred alongside Shraddha Kapoor in Baaghi 3, the third film in the Baaghi film series, released in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic caused theaters to close, which had an impact on the movie’s earnings. Nevertheless, the movie made 1.37 billion Indian rupees worldwide, had the largest opening day collection in Bollywood history, and went on to become the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of that year.
Commercial fluctuations (2021–present)
Shroff costarred with Tara Sutaria in the action sequel Heropanti 2, which was released in 2022, following no releases in 2021. Critics gave it unfavorable reviews. “Heropanti 2 suffers from a poor storyline despite lavish production value and fantastic stunts by Shroff,” wrote Bollywood Hungama’s Taran Adarsh. Eventually, the movie bombed at the box office. Shroff and Kriti Sanon reunited in Vikas Bahl’s science fiction action film Ganapath in 2023.
According to Bhavna Agarwal of India Today, Tiger Shroff, as usual, excels in action scenes but falls short of touching viewers’ emotions in his role as Guddu/Ganapath. It was yet another flop in the marketplace.
In the 2024 release of Ali Abbas Zafar’s action film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Shroff will collaborate with Akshay Kumar.
Other work
In 2017, Bengaluru Tigers, a team owned by 8K Miles Media Group, signed Shroff as a Brand Ambassador and co-owner. In the first season of Super Fight League, the first mixed martial arts (MMA) league in India, the Bengaluru Tigers finished third. In 2018, Shroff was appointed as Prowl’s Brand Ambassador. Additionally, he represents the brands of Pepsi, Casio India, ASICS India, 8 PM Premium Black, Macho, Garnier, Forca, and Great White Electronic as a brand ambassador.
