Later the same year, she debuted in Malayalam cinema with Doubles (2011), costarring alongside Mammootty and Nadiya Moidu.
Pannu costarred with Prabhas and Kajal Aggarwal in a brief part in her subsequent film, Mr. Perfect (2011). She costarred with Ravi Teja and Kajal Aggarwal in the high-profile movie Veera (2011), which got mixed reviews. Her next appearance was in Vandhaan Vendraan, her second Tamil film, which did not do well at the box office and drew mixed reviews from critics. She starred opposite Gopichand in Krishna Vamsi’s Mogudu in her next movie. For her performance, she received praise from critics. During this period, she contributed to a number of Telugu movies, such as Shadow, Daruvu, and Gundello Godari. Pannu talked about being called an “unlucky charm” in later years because all of her movies didn’t do well at the box office.
David Dhawan’s comedy Chashme Baddoor, which starred Siddharth, Rishi Kapoor, Divyendu Sharma, and Ali Zafar, was Pannu’s first Hindi cinema appearance. Remade from the 1981 original, it received overwhelmingly poor reviews yet turned out to be a box office hit. She later starred alongside Ajith Kumar, Nayanthara, and Arya in the high-profile action movie Arrambam. She was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress – Tamil and won the Most Enthusiastic Performer – Female prize at the 2014 Edison Awards.
She took a year off from movies, but her supporting performance as undercover agent Shabana Khan in Neeraj Pandey’s spy thriller Baby (2015) was a major career breakthrough. She later starred in two Tamil films: Aishwarya R. Dhanush’s Vai Raja Vai, in which she had a special appearance, and Muni 3, a horror comedy, in which she costarred with Raghava Lawrence.
Success in Hindi films (2016–2020)
Pannu was approached by Shoojit Sircar for the courtroom drama Pink while filming Running Shaadi. Since the topic had not “been dealt with head-on yet in mainstream cinema,” she was “curious and excited” about it. Alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Kirti Kulhari, and Andrea Tariang, the film featured three females as they battled a molestation allegation against a politician’s nephew. Reviews of the movie and Pannu’s performance were favorable.
Pannu and the other two women “deliver natural performances as strong but emotionally vulnerable women, without a hint of affectation,” according to Rajeev Masand. Pink became a huge commercial success, bringing in1.08 billion (US$13 million) globally. In addition to earning her the IIFA Woman of the Year award and earning her first nomination for the IIFA Award for Best Actress, Pannu later stated that the movie was a turning point in her career.
Pannu played a Punjabi girl who assists couples in eloping to be married in the romantic comedy Running Shaadi, which was her first movie of 2017. Although reviews for the movie were varied, Pannu’s performance was universally praised. She next starred in The Ghazi Attack, a naval battle drama that was based on the enigmatic sinking of PNS Ghazi during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani battle. Simultaneously shot in Telugu and Hindi, the movie had a moderate box office performance. Pannu returned to the character in Naam Shabana, a spin-off of her movie Baby. Pandey “decided to give the story an arc” after noticing that Pannu’s seven-eight-minute scene in Baby as special agent Shabana Khan was warmly welcomed. She trained in various mixed martial arts, including Krav Maga and Kudo, for the role. Sarita A. Tanwar of Daily News and Analysis called Pannu’s performance “fantastic in every scene,” but Udita Jhunjhunwala of Mint said she is “hardly likable” in the movie. Reactions to the film were varied. Pannu went on to play the protagonist’s girlfriend in the action-comedy Judwaa 2 and a ghost in the Telugu horror comedy Anando Brahma. With almost 2 billion (US$24 million), the latter, a reimagining of the 1997 namesake movie, was a commercial triumph. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express, who didn’t enjoy the movie, said that Pannu was the “real surprise” of the cast and that she “makes the most” of a part that was otherwise poorly written.
Saqib Saleem costarred in Pannu’s first release of the year, Dil Juunglee (2018). Both the public and the critics were unimpressed with it. The sports drama Soorma, directed by Shaad Ali and based on the life of field hockey player Sandeep Singh (Diljit Dosanjh), was her follow-up. Soorma became a financial success in spite of the negative reviews. Then, in the legal drama Mulk, starring Anubhav Sinha, Pannu played a lawyer. According to Pannu, the movie portrays genuine nationalism and patriotism without taking sides. This film gets Tapsee her first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics), and Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in commended her performance, calling her one of the “strong turns” of the movie.
Following her portrayal as an antagonist in the Telugu action film Neevevaro, Pannu costarred with Abhishek Bachchan and Vicky Kaushal in Anurag Kashyap’s romantic movie Manmarziyaan as Rumi Bagga, a free-spirited girl entangled in a love triangle. The film received favorable reviews when it debuted at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, and Pannu’s performance received considerable praise from critics. “With her cloud of red hair enveloping her, Rumi seems, continuously to be a woman on a warpath,” Anupama Chopra said of her performance, describing it as “mercurial, mysterious, and maddening.” She also appeared in the short films Nitishastra and Baarish aur Chowmein that same year.
Sujoy Ghosh’s psychological thriller Badla, an official remake of the 2016 Spanish film The Invisible Guest, was the first of Pannu’s many releases in 2019. Additionally, it was her second time working with Amitabh Bachchan. The film featured a male protagonist and she was first offered a supporting role. However, Pannu persuaded the producer to give a woman the lead role, and he accepted, offering her the part. Both Badla and Pannu’s portrayal of astute businesswoman Naina Sethi received overwhelmingly excellent reviews. The Hindu’s film reviewer Namrata Joshi praised Pannu for being “in fine form” in her review; the movie did well at the box office.
In addition to receiving two nominations for Best Actress at the annual IIFA and Screen award shows, Pannu’s performance in the movie garnered her the Zee Cine Award for Best Actress (Critics). Then, in Ashwin Saravanan’s psychological thriller Game Over, Pannu played a game designer who fights a home invasion while using a wheelchair. The movie was simultaneously filmed in Telugu and Tamil. Pannu had to spend 12 hours a day for 25 days in a wheelchair throughout the filming. Pannu “is never less than convincing” and “may be the primary reason why you must go out and watch this film,” according to Saibal Chatterjee, who also lauded the movie and her performance.
Her next role was that of an ISRO scientist in the space drama Mission Mangal, which focused on the Mars Orbiter Mission, India’s first interplanetary voyage. The idea of a space movie with “several leading ladies in it” appealed to Pannu, so she agreed to play a part in it. One of Pannu’s greatest financial achievements was Mission Mangal, which raised approximately ?2.9 billion (US$35 million) worldwide. Saand Ki Aankh, the biographical film directed by Tushar Hiranandani and starring Bhumi Pednekar, was her year-ending movie. After undergoing three months of pistol shooting training, Pannu played the part of Prakashi Tomar, one of the oldest sharpshooters in the world. Anna M. M. Vetticad wrote that Pannu and Pednekar both succeeded in “delivering equally finely tuned, sensitive performances,” indicating that her role was warmly accepted. Pannu and Pednekar shared the Best Actress (Critics) Filmfare Award.
In Anubhav Sinha’s social drama Thappad, Pannu’s only 2020 release, she portrayed Amrita, a housewife who petitions for divorce after being slapped by her husband. She claimed that she felt suffocated by the character’s “righteousness, her maturity to handle every situation” Pannu’s acting and the movie were widely praised by critics. She “drives the film,” yet “the effort she puts into her performance shows,” according to Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express. In addition to receiving her third nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics), Pannu was given the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. It turned out to be a moderately successful movie.
Streaming projects (2021–present)
Haseen Dillruba, a romantic thriller starring Vikrant Massey, was Pannu’s first release of 2021. The movie was Pannu’s first of many streaming releases, and it debuted on the streaming service Netflix. That year, it became the most-watched Hindi movie on the platform. However, critics did not like the movie or Pannu’s performance. Rohan Naahar of Hindustan Times called it a “hot mess” and said that Pannu’s portrayal of a bored housewife named Rani was “all over the place.” He also called the movie “illogical” and “ill-conceived.” “Pannu’s delivery is exactly the same in her films: only the costumes change,” said Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express, who also criticized her performance in the movie. In spite of this, she received a fourth nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics) for her role in the movie. In general, Pannu’s performance opposite Vijay Sethupathi in the Tamil comedy horror Annabelle Sethupathi remained overlooked. Rashmi Rocket, a sports drama that narrates the tale of an Indian track and field athlete who underwent gender testing after receiving a diagnosis of hyperandrogenism, was her year-ending film. The Times of India’s Ronak Kotecha said, “Pannu demonstrates her abilities once more. The actress does a fantastic job of having us cheer for her character, and her attempt to celebrate Rashmi’s win and bear her suffering is as genuine as it gets. For her role in the movie, she was nominated for her second Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Swaroop RSJ’s Telugu film Mishan Impossible was Pannu’s third and last release of 2021. After Anando Brahma in 2017, this was her first Telugu film.
Pannu appeared in the 2022 comedy-suspense film Looop Lapeta, which was a formal remake of the German movie Run Lola Run from 1998. Netflix released it. Pannu won the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actress in a Web Original Film for her performance in the film, which was well-reviewed by critics. She then acted in Shabaash Mithu, a Srijit Mukherji-directed movie that was based on the life of Mithali Raj, the former Test and ODI captain of the Indian women’s national cricket team. Although the movie was an economic flop at the box office and garnered negative reviews from critics and viewers, Pannu’s performance was praised, and she was nominated for a fifth time for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics).
She next acted in her second project with director Anurag Kashyap, the sci-fi mystery movie Dobaaraa, which was an adaptation of the Spanish thriller Mirage (2018). Despite getting favorable reviews for both the movie and Pannu’s performance, the movie was a box office bust. Blurr, her debut work, was made available online on Zee5 in December. The movie, which was a remake of the Spanish thriller Julia’s Eyes (2010), was Pannu’s third adaptation of a Spanish original, following Dobaara (2022) and Badla (2019). She later costarred with Ali Fazal, Nana Patekar, and Shriya Saran in the romantic comedy Tadka. Since Pannu and Fazal had not received payment, they decided not to take part in the film’s advertising because of unresolved financial concerns with the producers. The Times of India’s Archika Khurana critiqued Pannu’s “off-key dubbing” but felt that she gave “solid support” and that she and Fazal were “underutilized” despite her dislike of the movie.
Pannu costarred alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Rajkumar Hirani’s comedy-drama Dunki in 2023 as Manu, a Punjabi woman who wants to visit England. She said she admired Khan and that working with him had been a “dream” when she was signed on to the movie. “In the emotionally charged scenes, Pannu showcases a strong grip on her character, and in the funny ones, too, she holds her ground,” said Hindustan Times’ Monika Rawal Kukreja, who praised Pannu’s performance as “natural” but expressed disappointment with her connection with Khan.
The movie was a box office triumph, earning over 450 crore (US$54 million), making it Pannu’s highest-grossing movie. She received a third nomination for the Best Actress Filmfare Award for Dunki. In the romantic thriller sequel Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, Pannu reprised her role to start in 2024. She said she felt comfortable knowing that audiences had already responded favorably to the role. Uday Bhatia gave Mint a mixed review, pointing out that Pannu’s acting improved the storyline of an otherwise “flailing” movie. Pannu played a social media influencer who finds out about her husband’s (Ammy Virk) adultery in the ensemble comedy Khel Khel Mein. Devesh Sharma of Filmfare praised her “standout performance” that deviated from her “serious actress” reputation. The Times of India ascribed the movie’s box office failure to its release alongside Stree 2. Pannu will next play a police officer in Woh Ladki Hai Kahaan and make an appearance in the science fiction film Alien, directed by Barath Neelakantan.
