Story of the Stree 2 film

The film begins with Stree set to re-enter Chanderi, the scenario that closed the previous installment. She decides to depart after noticing a statue of herself at the town entrance bearing the words, “o stree, protect us.” A headless ghost known as “Sarkata” is a new threat that Chanderi must contend with after years of absence. She kidnaps victims at night and takes them to a terrifying parallel universe. Unaware of the ghost’s existence, the villagers wrongly think the vanished woman has moved on to greater opportunities. Vicky often imagines the Girl With No Name, sometimes known as “She,” in front of him since he is still in love with her. Rudra is in the midst of receiving an anonymous letter that contains pages missing from the Chanderi Puran along with the mysterious words “he will come.”

Sarkata abducts Bittu’s girlfriend, Chitti, one evening. The existence of the ghost is confirmed by a beggar who saw the kidnapping. By examining the ripped pages of the Chanderi Puran, Vicky, Bittu, and Rudra learn the story behind Sarkata. They learn that Sarkata is the angry ghost of Chandrabhan, the former village chief who killed Courtesan Stree by burning her alive and murdering her husband. Sarkata has returned to target progressive women after Stree left Chanderi. The companions seek to find Jana in Delhi, who was formerly possessed by Stree, after realizing they need Stree’s assistance to beat Sarkata.

Reluctantly, Jana, who lives with his cousin Bhaskar, decides to help when he learns the true reason for their attempt to entice him back to Chanderi through a stage production. Sarkata attacks Jana and almost kills her while she searches the old fort for Stree. Jana then begins to get images of the parallel realm in which the kidnapped women are being held captive. The party is astonished when Jana comes back to life because they thought he was dead, and Sarkata follows them as they barely escape the fort. She emerges while Sarkata terrorizes the town, and she uses the powers of Stree’s braid connected to her hair to fight Sarkata and save the group. The terrified women of the community accuse Vicky of having defeated Stree, which they say paved the way for Sarkata to appear.

Vicky is persuaded that he is the best person for the job because of his pure soul in response to their demand to accept responsibility for the new threat. She gives Vicky a knife made of magic and tells him to chop off half of Sarkata’s head with it. The trio plans a dance performance by Rudra’s lover Shama in order to trap Sarkata. Vicky tries to decapitate Sarkata during the performance, but he is not successful. Then, every man in the room is under Sarkata’s control—Vicky, Rudra, and Jana excepted. After Bittu and the other possessed men, including Sarkata, kidnap Shama, the ladies of the community are under their influence.

In a desperate attempt to find a way out, the group pursues a lead from the anonymous letter to a mental health facility, where they come upon a Sarkata descendent. The man discloses that only a being that is “half of both”—neither entirely human nor fully animal—can destroy Sarkata. With this knowledge, She creates a creature that can penetrate Sarkata’s lair by fusing her body with Vicky’s. Vicky and She encounter Sarkata within the lair. Vicky uses the magical dagger to chop Sarkata’s head in two, but each head that is severed grows back into several new heads. When Bhaskar appears in his werewolf form and overwhelms them, he attacks Sarkata.

But when Sarkata reattaches his head and defeats Bhaskar, the fight turns deadly. She calls out to her mother, who turns out to be Stree, in a last-ditch effort. When Stree arrives, Vicky assists her in defeating Sarkata by pulling his body into the lava and beheading him once more, thereby destroying him. The women are set free and the men are freed from the ghost’s hold following Sarkata’s defeat. Heroes are honored in the form of Vicky and his buddies. She whispers her name to Vicky before confessing that she is a witch and having to depart.

After becoming human, Bhaskar begs Jana to put him up with She in the woods. Jana refuses, but Bhaskar persists in his request. In a scene from the mid-credits, a mystery pot with Sarkata’s remnants makes its way to the mental hospital. There, his descendant breathes in the burning smoke from the remains and is taken over by the monster, giving rise to hints about the terror’s possible return.

Review of the film

Critics gave Stree 2 favorable reviews. With an average rating of 6.3/10, 67% of the 12 critics’ reviews on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes are positive. Bollywood Hungama’s reviewer gave the movie a 4.5-star rating, noting that it is packed with humor and terror in equal measure and that it is the beginning of a lucrative franchise.

The movie received a rating of 4 out of 5 stars from Simran Khan of Times Now, who called it a neatly packed entertainment. She applauded Rao’s exceptional performance as well as Kapoor and Tripathi’s outstanding supporting cast. She underlined that despite a few issues, such as a predictable ending, the movie successfully strikes a mix between humor and terror, making it a fun viewing that will appeal to genre enthusiasts.

The Times of India’s Abhishek Srivastava gave the movie a rating of 4 out of 5 stars as well, calling it a headless marvel with plenty of humor. He emphasized the film’s deft narrative, which adds a male antagonist named Sarkata who preys on contemporary women, thereby building on the attractiveness of its predecessor. Srivastava discovered that the movie, despite some unimpressive character moments and pacing problems in the second half, offers an enjoyable horror-comedy experience in the end.

Hindu Tushar Joshi Today gave the movie a 3.5 out of 5-star rating and mentioned how entertaining Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor’s world of craziness, is. He highlighted the film’s sharp storyline and better visual effects, praising its hilarious and exciting continuation of the franchise. Joshi did, however, point out that despite the film’s problems with pacing and coherence in its multiverse crossover, it excels because of several excellent performances, most notably Rao’s and Akshay Kumar’s unexpected cameo.

The Hindustan Times’ Rishabh Suri commended the sequel for being better than the first one, saying that Rajkummar Rao leads a better sequel with Abhishek Banerjee being its standout feature. Suri observed that the movie deftly combines humor with social commentary, especially on women who must contend with patriarchal restrictions. In addition to applauding Bhatia’s noteworthy debut, he emphasized the snappy dialogue and exceptional performances, particularly from Rao and Banerjee.

A more critical assessment was given by Shilajit Mitra of The Hindu, who said that while Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, and company bring some amusement, there isn’t much else to say. While the movie has the same charming qualities as its predecessor, he pointed out that it lacks some of the subtle criticism on patriarchy and feels more like a factory-made sequel with a complicated plot. Rao gives a charming performance as Vicky, but Mitra criticized the movie for relying too much on the franchise’s intricacy, which he believed took away from the original film’s compelling element.

The Quint’s Pratiksha Mishra criticized the visual effects of the movie, saying they made Sarkata, the antagonist, seem less scary and more comical. Even though the sequel aims to heighten the terror by altering the antagonist’s gender, Mishra claimed that this undercuts the intended horror and severity of the character’s toxic masculinity, lowering the overall fear value compared to the original.

A similar assessment was made by Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV India, who gave the movie 2.5 stars. He said that instead of being terrifying, Shraddha Kapoor’s movie is bewildering. It aims to replicate the popularity of its predecessor by fusing comedy and paranormal themes, but it ultimately fails because of its cliched storyline and lack of genuine horrors. Although Chatterjee praised the performers, he felt that the film felt stale despite its creative moments because of its overuse of predictable humor and archaic representations.

Box office collection

The day before movie opened, Stree 2 broke the record set by Chennai Express with a paid preview revenue of ₹9.40 crore in a few theaters. The movie, which debuted on Independence Day alongside Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein, made ₹64.80 crore at the box office, making it the second-highest opening day for a Hindi movie, only surpassed by Jawan (2023). It turned out to be the best debut day for Rao in his professional career and the second-best for Shraddha Kapoor, after only Saaho (2019).

As of August 21, 2024, the movie had brought in ₹341.91 crore in India and ₹58.93 crore abroad, for a total of ₹400.84 crore globally.
