“Ruslaan” (2024) is a Hindi-language action drama helmed by director Karan Lalit Butani. The film marks another bold step for Aayush Sharma, who leads the cast with intensity and flair, supported by Sushrii Shreya Mishraa, the seasoned Jagapathi Babu, and Vidya Malvade. Backed by producers Rudrapati Ramana Rao and K. K. Radhamohan, the movie delivers a mix of high-octane action and emotional stakes.
With a musical score composed by Vishal Mishra, Rajat Nagpal, and Akashdeep Sengupta, Ruslaan attempts to strike a balance between adrenaline-pumping sequences and heartfelt moments. G. Srinivas Reddy’s cinematography adds a sleek visual edge, while Rajendra Bhaat’s editing keeps the pace brisk.
Released on 26 April 2024, Ruslaan opened with moderate buzz but struggled to maintain momentum at the box office. Critics offered a mixed response, praising the action choreography and performances while pointing out shortcomings in the screenplay and narrative depth. Despite its commercial performance, Ruslaan stands as a showcase of Aayush Sharma’s evolving screen presence and the team’s ambition to deliver a stylized action experience.

Story of the film
Aayush Sharma’s character Ruslaan is committed to demonstrating that his identity is not shaped by his father’s terrorist status. He seeks a permanent position with RAW, India’s top spy organization, to cleanse his record. But his strong desire to act morally sometimes puts him in more difficult and risky circumstances than he anticipates.
After witnessing his entire family being destroyed in a violent conflict as a boy, Ruslaan develops into a rather well-mannered adult. A major factor in his improved circumstances is his adoption by virtuous policeman Major Sameer (Jagapathi Babu) and his devoted wife. However, his sole goal in life is to serve his nation no matter what and eventually clear his name as well. Even if it means going after the most dangerous terrorists alone and disobeying the directives of his immediate boss and RAW agent Mantra (Vidya Malvade) on important tasks.
Here, it appears that director Karan L. Butani is primarily concerned with emphasizing his starring man’s valor in any situation. The storyline of the movie is devoted to praising and idolizing Ruslaan as the guy who can overcome any obstacles, from his entrance sequence to the finale. The plot of the movie, which was created by Yunus Sajawal, Mohit Srivastava, and Kavin Dave, is full of stylized action and turns that are absurd yet not quite predictable. This provides ample space and justification for the inclusion of several expertly planned action scenes and stunts (performed by Vikram Dahiya and Dinesh Subbarayan). The major surprise at the conclusion does not exactly add up, even though the anticipation is built up from the beginning and maintained until the finale.
Ayush Sharma performs admirably in action sequences but falls short in emotionally charged passages. The viewer finds it challenging to empathize with Ruslaan’s emotional journey because he finds it difficult to portray the depth of his internal strife. When it comes to doing some hard action, debutante Sushrii Shreya Mishraa, who portrays his love interest Vani, too gets her turn. Except for a few unnecessary songs in between, the script has a consistent cadence. There are several exciting scenes spread across the two halves. Nonetheless, it is inconceivable how shallow and straightforward Ruslaan and his accomplice’s methods of infiltration and survival in the most heinous circumstances are. It presents Jagapathi Babu as a decent policeman who also shows love for a terrorist’s orphaned son. The necessary conviction in the writing is absent, though. Furthermore, there was room for more substantial character development. The movie also makes extensive use of nationalistic overtones, which can occasionally come across as forced or too simple, even if they lend a certain amount of emotional impact. The cinematography by G. Sreenivas Reddy is excellent.

Review
News18’s Titas Chowdhary rated Ruslaan 3.5 out of 5 stars, writing that despite its quirks, it is entertaining because of its unreserved appeal. With ease, Aayush Sharma carries the movie on his shoulders.
Aayush Sharma dazzles with his excellent action scenes in Karan Butani’s Ruslaan, according to Riya Sharma of DNA India, who awarded it 3.5 out of 5. All the necessary components of an action entertainment are there in this movie.
While Ruslaan had the potential to be a gripping drama like Mission Kashmir or a cat-and-mouse pursuit like Tiger and Pathaan, it fell short, according to Arushi Jain of India Today, who awarded it three out of five stars.
Ruslaan primarily focuses on appealing to the public with an unrelenting dose of action and thrill but no rationale, according to Ronak Kotecha of The Times of India, who awarded it 2.5/5 ratings. If you are more interested in action than complex storylines, this formulaic action movie is amusing in some sections.
Firstpost’s Vinamra Mathur rated the movie 2.5 out of 5 stars, saying it is forgettable yet has certain guilty pleasures.
Ruslaan has decent, watchable action, and a few sequences manage to capture the audience’s interest, according to Pinkvilla’s Rishil Jogani, who scored it 2.5 out of 5 stars. Other than that, there are not many positive aspects of the movie.
Ruslaan fails because it follows a template that is utilized by many others, and there is only one way to replay it today without seeming monotonous, according to Shubham Kulkarni of OTTplay, who awarded it two out of five stars. Although Aayush Sharma has a lot of talent, these ventures will not highlight it.
Ruslaan is a showcase for Aayush Sharma’s ability and a little more, according to Rohit Bhatnagar of The Free Press Journal, who awarded it two out of five stars.
According to NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee, who gave it a rating of 1.5 out of 5, it is packed with action, music, emotions, and a lot of vacuous speech and bravado in two hours of nonstop overdrive.
The Aayush Sharma film transports you back to a time when Bollywood films did not really care about coherent plots as long as there were enough formulaic set-pieces, Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express commented.
