Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba (transl. The Beautiful Beloved Returns) is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language romantic thriller directed by Jayprad Desai and penned by writer Kanika Dhillon. Backed by Colour Yellow Productions in collaboration with T-Series Films, this gripping sequel to the 2021 hit Haseen Dillruba brings together a dynamic cast featuring Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, and Sunny Kaushal. The film made its global debut on Netflix on August 9, 2024, continuing the tale of love, betrayal, and suspense.

Story of the film

Five years after the events of Haseen Dillruba, Rishu—now going by the nickname Ravi—works as a delivery boy and has a prosthetic hand, while Rani resides in Agra and operates a beauty parlor. They live apart to avoid being discovered, but they communicate via phone and want to go to Thailand. Rani’s landlady’s doctor, Abhimanyu, has expressed love interest in her, but she has not reciprocated, while Rishu’s landlady, Poonam, has made overt advances on him, which he has also turned down.

After reading the book that served as the inspiration for their cover-up, A.C.P. Kishore Rawat and Senior Inspector Manav Shukla, who are now in Agra, visit Rani and confess that they know she and Rishu are accountable for Neel’s death. Neel’s uncle, Mritunjay “Monty” Paswan, is in charge of the inquiry and is committed to establishing Rani and Rishu’s guilt. Rishu’s escape preparations are thwarted when Monty swiftly apprehends their travel agency. In a panic, Rani chooses to wed Abhimanyu to allay suspicions, and Rishu reluctantly accepts. Abhimanyu accepts Rani’s proposal, but only if they agree not to fall in love. He accepts despite his surprise, and the two tie the knot.

Since their wedding, Rani and Abhimanyu have remained platonic. Abhimanyu, who lost his parents and then his uncle and aunt when he was a little child, says that he didn’t commit suicide because of his love for Rani. An intoxicated Rani unintentionally confesses one night that they used their marriage to conceal Rishu’s existence. In order to please Rani, Abhimanyu agrees to help them escape and hides Rishu in his clinic. After robbing his father of his business, Abhimanyu later confesses to Rishu that he murdered his uncle, aunt, and their two children as payback. After attacking Abhimanyu out of fear, who locks him in, Rishu manages to get out.

Abhimanyu assaults Rani the night before she and Rishu are scheduled to go, displaying his psychopathic inclinations. She runs to the cops for assistance. Rani is arrested shortly after a burning vehicle containing two burnt victims is discovered. These remains are recognized as those of Poonam and Lallan, who blackmailed Abhimanyu after he assisted in killing his uncle with a snake. The authorities highlight Rani’s abuse while in detention in an attempt to entice Rishu out. To give them one last chance to spend time together, Rishu consents to surrender if they free Rani at a railroad bridge. Monty concurs. As Rishu and Rani are making amends at the police-enclosed bridge, a policeman who turns out to be Abhimanyu in disguise approaches. All three plunge into the crocodile-infested river below after a brief battle. They are assumed deceased since no remains have been discovered.

However, Monty keeps looking into it and finds that Poonam visited Rishu the day Abhimanyu hid him, indicating that Abhimanyu’s corpse may be Lallan’s and that Lallan is an ally of Abhimanyu. The night Rani handed herself in, Rishu went inside her and Abhimanyu’s home, and two hours later, Rani left for the police station. Monty concludes that the events at the bridge were planned. Flashbacks show that the three of them agree to cooperate to avoid the police once Rishu gets to Abhimanyu’s residence. Since Poonam and Lallan are important witnesses, Abhimanyu murders them to stage his demise. They then staged their escape using Rishu’s demand that they surrender at the bridge. Rani didn’t realize that during their escape, Abhimanyu took off Rishu’s prosthetic arm underwater, leaving him vulnerable to a crocodile attack because he couldn’t swim. Abhimanyu and Rani escape the river unscathed. Rani is devastated at the suspected death of Rishu.

Abhimanyu and Rani go to the hamlet of Deosar six months later. Abhimanyu owns a clinic, and Rani teaches. Abhimanyu and Monty receive letters from Rani inviting them to a cliffside. Before plunging from the cliff into the river below, she confronts Abhimanyu and confesses that she knows he killed Rishu to be rid of him from her life. Then, Abhimanyu is arrested by Monty. In a shocking turn of events, flashbacks show that Rishu returned to Rani and told her the truth after surviving the crocodile attack. After surviving her fall, Rani and Rishu make their getaway. The fact that Abhimanyu is Dinesh Pandit’s son is also disclosed.

Production

The movie was revealed in January 2023. Vikrant Massey and Taapsee Pannu return to their prior roles, and Sunny Kaushal joins the ensemble. The film’s main photography began in the middle of January 2023. The movie was finished in December 2023. On March 1, 2024, the teaser was made public, and on July 25, 2024, the trailer was published.

Songs/Music

The music composers are Sachet-Parampara and Anurag Saikia, while the lyrics writer is Raj Shekhar and Kumaar. “Haste Haste,” the first single, was released on July 31, 2024. “Kya Haal Hai,” 2nd song, was released on August 5, 2024.

Review

Averaging 5.5/10, 38% of the reviews from 16 critics are positive on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie did not get positive reviews from viewers.

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba is not as compelling as the first part, but it does have its share of exciting sequences and twists and turns, according to a Bollywood Hungama critic who gave the movie a rating of three stars out of five.

The Indian Express’s Shubhra Gupta gave the movie a rating of three out of five stars and noted that Sunny Kaushal’s portrayal of “mar-mitne-wala-aashiq,” Vikrant Massey’s heroic perseverance for his one true love, and Taapsee Pannu’s role as the cunning Rani are all excellent.

According to Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com, who gave the movie a rating of two out of five stars, Taapsee, Vikrant, and Sunny get along well both alone and with one another and show that they are capable of withstanding the appearance of deceit. The sizzle is what’s lacking.
