Mithun Chakraborty is an acclaimed Indian actor, producer, and former Member of Parliament, primarily known for his work in Hindi and Bengali cinema. Born on June 16, 1950, in Kolkata, West Bengal, he began his acting career in the late 1970s and quickly rose to prominence with his unique style and versatile performances.
Chakraborty gained widespread recognition for his roles in iconic films such as “Disco Dancer” (1982), which catapulted him to superstardom and earned him the moniker “Disco King” of Indian cinema. His magnetic presence and dancing skills endeared him to audiences across the country.
In the 1976 art house drama Mrigayaa, Chakraborty made his acting debut and went on to win his first National Film Award for Best Actor. Chakraborty rose to prominence after the 1982 release of Disco Dancer, a huge hit at the box office in both the Soviet Union and India. In addition to Disco Dancer, Chakraborty was well-known for a variety of other roles as a lead and supporting actor.
He was honored with the 1991 Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the beloved film Agneepath as Krishnan Iyer M.A. Afterwards, he was honored with two more National Film Awards for his roles in Swami Vivekananda (1998) and Tahader Katha (1992). Over 350 films, including Bengali, Hindi, Odia, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Punjabi ones, feature Chakraborty. In the Limca Book of Records, he holds the record for the most lead actor releases (19 films) in 1989. As of July 2022, the record remains unbroken in Bollywood.
The Monarch Group, which has holdings in the hotel and educational industries, is owned by Chakraborty. In addition, he founded Paparatzy Productions, a production company. He founded the Cine & T.V. Artistes Association (CINTAA) trust in 1992 with Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt to aid indigent actors. In addition, he served as Chair of the Film Studios Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union, an organization that safeguards the well-being of theater employees and addresses their grievances.
The Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records already list the television program Dance India Dance, in which Chakraborty holds the title of Grand Master. In the 2012 Indian presidential election, Chakraborty was instrumental in mediating between Pranab Mukherjee of the Indian National Congress and Mamata Banerjee, securing Mukherjee’s party, the All India Trinamool Congress. On March 7, 2021, he became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one day before the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election of that year.
Life and Education
On June 16, 1950, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India, Mithun Chakraborty was born into a Bengali Hindu family. Basanta Kumar Chakraborty and Shanti Rani Chakraborty were his parents. He attended Oriental Seminary before graduating from Scottish Church College in Kolkata with a B.Sc. in Chemistry. Following that, he enrolled in and eventually graduated from Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India. Before going into the film industry, he was a Naxalite, but tragedy struck his family when his only brother died from electrocution in an odd accident.
Despite the significant risk to his own life, he left the Naxalite fold and went back to his family. He made friends with well-known Naxal figure Ravi Ranjan, also referred to by his friends as “Bhaa” (the ultimate savior), during his time as a Naxalite. Bhaa was well-known for his oratory and manipulating prowess.
Film career
Chakraborty debuted in Hindi cinema in 1976 with Mrinal Sen’s art-house film Mrigayaa, for which he was the first actor to win the prestigious National Film Award for Best Actor for his first-ever feature film. He had a small part in the somewhat successful Dulal Guha film Do Anjaane that year, which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Prem Chopra.
He debuted in Bengali cinema with the box office hit Nadi Theke Sagare (1978) directed by Arabinda Mukhopadhyay.
His first solo commercial success was the spy thriller Surakksha by Ravikant Nagaich, which came out in 1979. Four more popular Hindi films, Unees Bees, Hum Paanch, and Wardat (all from 1980), as well as a Bengali film, Kalankini Kankabati (1981), came after this.
Stardom (1982–1995):
In 1982, Chakraborty made his feature film debut in two hit movies, Shaukeen (directed by Basu Chatterjee) and Ashanti (starring Umesh Mehra). Disco Dancer, a dance film directed by B. Subhash, helped launch his career. Disco Dancer turned out to be an enormous hit both domestically and internationally. It also made history by being the first Indian movie to gross ₹1 billion (roughly US$13 million). Bappi Lahiri’s soundtrack was an enormous chartbuster and was a major factor in the film’s enormous box office success, particularly in nations like China and the Soviet Union.
He made his film debut in Bengali cinema that same year with Gautam Mukherjee’s musical hit Troyee. He starred in two popular films in 1983: the critically acclaimed lighthearted romance Pasand Apni Apni by Basu Chatterjee and the hit legal drama Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye by T. Rama Rao. He enjoyed success the next year in movies like Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, Boxer, Ghar Ek Mandir, Baazi, and Jagir.
In 1985, Chakraborty, who acted opposite Padmini Kolhapure in Vijay Sadanah’s romantic drama Pyar Jhukta Nahin, enjoyed even more success. The movie became a blockbuster after doing incredibly well at the box office. Then came a superhit with Dharmendra in J.P. Dutta’s Ghulami and a hit with Shatrughan Sinha and Hema Malini in B. Subhash’s Aandhi-Toofan. The run of success was maintained in 1986 when K. Bapayya’s family drama Swarag Se Sunder, starring Jeetendra, Jaya Prada, and Kolhapure, became another hit.
Subsequently, he starred in superhit films Jaal and Dilwaala and won accolades for his portrayal in Sheesha, the first Hindi film to focus on workplace sexual harassment. With Muddat, Nasihat, and Zindagani, he achieved three more commercial successes by year’s end. Chakraborty starred in two of the highest-grossing movies of 1987: Dance Dance (B. Subhash) and Watan Ke Rakhwale (T. Rama Rao), an action thriller. Watan Ke Rakhwale was a huge hit in the country, but Dance Dance turned out to be more profitable since it became a massive hit in the Soviet Union. The songs “Zooby Zooby” and “Zindagi Meri Dance Dance” quickly rose to fame and are still well-known today.
Chakraborty’s career peaked between 1988 and 1992, a time when his work garnered him praise from critics and consumers alike. He scored hits in Prem Pratigyaa (1989), Ladaai (1989), Guru (1989), and Hum Se Na Takrana (1990), semi-hits in Bees Saal Baad (1988), Ladaai (1989), and Trinetra (1991), and superhits film in Waqt Ki Awaz (1988), Pyar Ka Mandir (1988), Ilaaka (1989), and Daata (1989) movies. He made an appearance in the 1990 action crime film Agneepath, directed by Mukul Anand, which starred Bachchan, Rohini Hattangadi, Madhavi, and Neelam in the key roles.
Chakraborty won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor and was highly praised for his performance. Agneepath did poorly at the ticket booths, but the movie went on to become a cult classic in later years. In 1992, he was awarded his second National Award for Best Actor for his performance as a freedom fighter in the highly regarded Bengali film Tahader Katha, directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta.
Midway through the 1990s, Chakraborty decided to take a break from mainstream Hindi cinema and work on low-budget projects, the majority of which failed because of their subpar quality. As a result, his career as a matinee idol began to fade. He acted in a number of these from 1993 to 1995, most of which were box office bombs, though a few, like Dalaal, Cheetah, Jallaad, and Ravan Raaj: A True Story (which turned out to be his last successful role as a lead actor) were notable successes.
Career fluctuations and return to prominence (1996–present):
After becoming well-known, Chakraborty kept acting in movies that didn’t advance his career. He starred in hundreds of these movies that were made under his own company, Mithun’s Dream Factory. Because his character in the critically acclaimed Tamil film Iruvar (1997) had to crop his hair, he was unable to play in the movie, which would have interfered with his other fifteen films at the time.
At this point, Chakraborty was the record holder for the most hero appearances in Hindi films. He experienced some success in the 1997 film Shapath and the 1998 film Chandaal during this time. In 1998, he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Ramakrishna Paramahansa in G.V. Iyer’s biographical drama Swami Vivekananda.
In the early 2000s, Chakraborty started to concentrate on Bengali films, putting his Bollywood career on hold. He starred in critically acclaimed movies from 2000 to 2003, including Rituparno Ghosh’s Titli (2002), Prasanta Bal’s Ferari Fauj (2002), Narayan Rao’s Santrash (2003), and Nepaldev Bhattacharjee’s Chaka (2000).
With the much-awaited Elaan and Lucky: No Time for Love, he made his comeback to mainstream Hindi cinema in 2005. However, both movies were critical and commercial failures, failing to help him rebuild his reputation. In 2007, he made a strong return with Mani Ratnam’s Guru. Guru was a huge hit at the box office and garnered very positive reviews from critics. Chakraborty was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor as a result of his widely praised portrayal of an honest editor. Additionally, he had a cameo in the song “Deewangi Deewangi” from Om Shanti Om, Farah Khan’s drama about reincarnation.
In 2010, following yet another run of failures, he starred in Rohit Shetty’s multi-star comedy Golmaal 3. It made ₹1.69 billion (US$21 million) in revenue and was a box office success. After Golmaal 3’s enormous success, two more big hits in 2012 included Housefull 2 and OMG—Oh My God!, along with an ok hit in Khiladi 786.
In 2013, Chakraborty released two full-length albums: the eagerly awaited Boss and Emmy. Boss and Enemmy both turned out to be critical and financial disasters. After that, he appeared in the action comedy Kick (2014) starring Salman Khan in a supporting role. At the end of its run, the movie made ₹3.88 billion (US$49 million) from its initial ₹260 million, making it a blockbuster at the box office.
He debuted in the films Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka and Gopala Gopala in Telugu and Tamil, respectively, in 2015. Gopala Gopala was a box office success, but the latter was a complete bust. He co-starred with Ayushmann Khurrana and Pallavi Sharda in Vibhu Puri’s highly regarded historical drama Hawaizaada in the same year. In 2018, he made his feature film debut in Kannada with the hit action thriller The Villain.
The Tashkent Files, a political thriller directed by Vivek Agnihotri, featured a significant role for Chakraborty in 2019. Although critics gave it bad reviews, the public responded well to it, and as a result, it remained in theaters for 100 days before becoming a sleeper hit at the box office. Chakraborty made a reappearance in Ram Gopal Varma’s horror thriller 12 ‘O’ Clock, following a year-long absence. He starred in two highly successful Bengali and Hindi box office films in 2022.
The first was The Kashmir Files by Agnihotri, which was based on the Hindu exodus from Kashmir. It received mixed reviews from critics, but at the end of its run, it had made ₹3.40 billion (US$43 million) worldwide and was hailed as a major blockbuster. For his role as a retired IAS officer in The Kashmir Files, he was nominated again for a Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category. The next was Projapoti, a family drama starring Avijit Sen and Dev. At the box office, this also became a smash hit. In 2022, he made his online debut on Prime Video’s web series Bestseller. He portrayed the lead in the popular Bengali film Kabuliwala, directed by Suman Ghosh, in 2023.
Television career
Chakraborty created the idea for Dance India Dance following the popularity of the Bengali competitive dance reality show Dance Bangla Dance. Produced by UTV Software Communications, this Indian dance competition show is aired on Zee TV and has grown to become the country’s biggest dance-based reality show.
The candidates have the opportunity to perform in front of Terrence Lewis, Remo D’Souza, and Geeta Kapoor, who serve on the panel of judges. Head judge Chakraborty is in charge of choosing the Top 18 live show finalists for the current season. Numerous television awards for the most popular dance reality show have been given to the program.
In addition, Chakraborty hosted the reality series Dadagiri Unlimited on Zee Bangla channel and was the Grand Master of Dance India Dance Little Masters. He took Sourav Ganguly’s place as the program’s host. On ETV Bangla, Chakraborty hosted Rannaghore Rockstar and Bigg Boss in Bengali. He debuted as an actor on television in the comedy series The Drama Company.
Chakraborty co-judged Dance Dance Junior in 2021 with Tollywood actors Soham and Srabanti Chatterjee, hosted by Star Jalsha.
In the January 2022 Colors TV premiere of the reality show Hunarbaaz: Desh Ki Shaan, he co-judged alongside Karan Johar and Parineeti Chopra.
He made a comeback to the Dance Bangla Dance set on Zee Bangla in 2023, playing the role of Mahaguru.
Political career
Following his nomination by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal Rajya Sabha Assembly Polls, which were held on February 7, 2014, Chakraborty became a member of parliament. The Rajya Sabha MP resigned on December 26, 2016. On March 7, 2021, Chakraborty became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Kailash Vijayvargiya and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ahead of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election of 2021.
Personal life
In 1979, he wed actress Helena Luke for the first time. However, the couple only lasted four months before divorcing. In 1979, he then wed the actress Yogeeta Bali.
Mimoh, Ushmey Chakraborty, Namashi Chakraborty, and Dishani Chakraborty, their adopted daughter, are the four children of Chakraborty and Yogeeta. He met actress Sridevi on the set of Jaag Utha Insan, and the two were romantically linked in the 1980s. Rumors circulated that the two were married. But Sridevi called off the romance when Chakraborty refused to leave his wife Yogeeta Bali.
When Chakraborty was admitted to the hospital on February 10, 2024, it was discovered that he had had a stroke. He had complained of chest pain. The 12th of February saw his release.
