Story of the film
At the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, the Indian national football team was beaten 10-1 by Yugoslavia. The All India Football Federation members hold coach Syed Abdul Rahim accountable for the team’s poor performance. Rahim asks for approval to assemble a fresh squad of players. Despite the reluctance of the federation’s members, particularly Subhankar, Rahim is supported by President Anjan, who permits him. Rahim then searches for players throughout India and assembles a new squad that includes, among others, P. K. Banerjee and Chuni Goswami from Calcutta, Tulsidas Balaram from Secunderabad, and Peter Thangaraj from Hyderabad. Rahim is the target of resentment from prominent Calcutta journalist Roy Choudhary because he assembled the team with a very small number of Calcutta-based players.
In Melbourne, the Indian team gets ready to play Australia in the 1956 Summer Olympics. Neville D’Souza gets disrespected by an Australian squad player who forces him to tie his shoes. The Indian team wins the match 7-1 after Neville scores a hat-trick, shocking the Australian squad. In the end, the Indian squad finished the Olympics in fourth place. Roy Choudhary and Subhankar intend to depose Rahim from the federation and install Subhankar as its president in the meantime. The Indian team competes against France, regarded as the world’s top team, at the 1960 Summer Olympics. The Indian squad does not qualify as the match ends in a 1-1 tie. Rahim is fired by the federation as the Indian team’s coach due to poor performance. Rahim also finds out that his frequent smoking has caused him to get lung cancer, and he will not be living for long.
Rahim suffers regular coughing spells and chooses to spend his remaining days with his family at home. Saira, his wife, encourages him to keep going for his goal of captaining the Indian squad to a gold medal. Rahim asks the federation to allow him to coach the squad one more time and swears he will not coach a team ever again if they do not take home a gold medal. The current president, Subhankar, first rejects his request but is forced to comply when the other federation members vote in favor of Rahim coaching the squad.
Rahim resumes coaching the squad and gets them ready for the Asian Games in Jakarta in 1962. However, due to a lack of funding, the Finance Ministry forbids the Indian team from competing. Rahim personally meets with Morarji Desai, the finance minister, and persuades him to allow only 16 players to compete. Rahim excludes his son Hakim and the others.
The squad in Jakarta is weakened when its goalie, Thangaraj, gets hurt before their first game and is replaced by Pradyut Barman. The Indian team loses to South Korea in their opening game, and the teammates point the finger at one another. Rahim helps them comprehend the value of collaboration and formation after the game. An opponent seriously hurts Jarnail Singh during their next game versus Thailand. The Indian team plays more aggressively when Rahim gives them instructions to make them pay for it, and they win 4-1. The decision to exclude Israel and Taiwan from the tournament is openly criticized by an Indian official, which infuriates the Indonesian populace and sparks widespread public demonstrations against the Indian squad.
The military is called in to protect the Indian team as demonstrators attack their bus on the day of the final match, which pits them against South Korea. Even though Rahim’s condition worsens and he starts coughing up blood, he inspires the squad with a speech. Roy Choudhary changes his mind and begins rooting for the Indian side after witnessing Rahim’s tenacity. Singh and Thangaraj also return to the lineup for the game. The Indian team won the sole gold medal in football at the Asian Games after winning the match 2-1.
