Story of the film

Sitara (Sobhita Dhulipala) proposes to her three-year-old lover on the spur of the moment. However, the truth is that she is hiding something from him. And when the two return to her family home in Kerala for the wedding, further truths about her troubled family emerge, taking her by surprise.

Sitara is an award-winning interior designer, and Arjun (played by Rajev Siddhartha), her lover, is a well-known Mumbai chef. Sitara rejects Arjun’s proposal and does not believe in marriage, despite his desire to wed her. However, Sitara finally persuades Arjun to marry her. Arjun instantly accepts, unknowing that Sitara is keeping something from him. In an attempt to have a quick wedding while remaining connected to her origins, she chose her grandmother’s house in Kerala as the location for a modest wedding. While everyone is taken aback by Sitara’s unexpected and hasty decision to marry, they go through with her preparations.

In the village, Sitara’s whole family congregates, including her grandmother Amuma (B. Jayashree), aunt Hema (Sonali Kulkarni), and parents Latha (Virginia Rodrigues) and Govind (Sanjay Bhutiani). Arjun, his father, and Sitara’s best friend Anjali (Tamara D’Souza) are with them.

As the wedding day approaches, Sitara discovers some old images that show Govind and Hema may have had an affair in the past, or are presently having one. It throws her off guard, and she convinces Arjun to join her in attempting to figure out what’s happening. And while Sitara is shocked by Hema Chechi’s duplicity, because her aunt had always prided herself as an independent lady who did not feel the need to marry, she also realizes that she is hiding her truth from Arjun. Sitara chooses to come clean to everyone, not knowing the consequences.

Director Vandana Kulkarni, whose 2018 film Noblemen is a heartbreaking depiction of bullying in boys’ hostels, brings together a cast of female characters from three generations for Love, Sitara. Sitara is self-reliant and self-assured, but she is also unsure of her own desires; Latha is a loving wife and mother who may have forgotten to live for herself. Hema, an air hostess by profession who is showered with male attention but has chosen to remain single, and Amuma, who has raised two daughters alone and appears to have hardened with time and circumstances. And they are all defective in different ways.

‘Love Sitara’ delves into family relationships and the truth that every family has secrets and dysfunction, no matter how hard one tries to maintain the appearance of a loving family. In addition, there is cultural pressure to comply. However, while the idea is sound, the film’s storyline is not always believable. It occasionally falls back on established cliches, and some sections are clumsy. However, there is still hope since the film’s message is revealed at the end. Szymon Lenkowski’s cinematography perfectly evokes Kerala’s lush greenery and atmosphere, while the soundtrack (Sangeet Haldipur, Siddharth Haldipur) is wonderfully hummable.

Review

Critics gave Love, Sitara good reviews.

The Times of India gave the film three stars out of five, with Sreeparna Sengupta praising the acting.

Only for the discipline it demonstrates in its narrative, Love, Sitara merits alike, if not love, stated Vinamra Mathur in Firstpost.

Mimansa Shekhar, writing for Times Now News, observed, Relatable in parts, pleasant in the rest. A casual look inside the inner workings of a family that may be fighting a war on the outside, but is connected from within. It’s déjà vu!

NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee hailed the film as unpretentious and steadfastly simple.

A review in The Hindu highlighted that the largest issue is the writing, which tacks arbitrarily between English and Hindi (with sprinklings of Malayalam).

In a review for The Hindustan Times, Rishabh Suri said that Sobhita Dhulipala’s family drama loses speed swiftly and leaves you unsatisfied.

Sonali Kulkarni gives an effortless gravitas to a picture tainted with melodrama, according to Cinema Express’ Kartik Bhardwaj.
