Production
In Marathi cinema, Dada Kondke ruled from the 1970s until the early 1990s. His films would all have a jubilee run in theaters, especially Bharatmata Cinema in Lalbaug and Kohinoor at Dadar. The comedic actor, who is well-known for his double-entendre speech, attempted his hand at Hindi film with Tere Mere Beech Mein (1984) and Andheri Raat Mein Diya Tere Haath Mein (1986) but only had mediocre success. The majority of his Hindi movies were translations of his popular Marathi films, however the translations lost something.
Dada’s final Hindi project, Khol De Meri Jubaan, was a re-imagining of his 1987 Marathi smash hit Muka Ghya Muka. His heroine was Bandini Mishra, and Mehmood played her father, who despises the silent simpleton Kondke. Despite being well-received in Northern interiors and including his signature comedy, the film failed to match the Marathi original’s level of success. Bandini Mishra plays the lead role in just a few Hindi films, but the film’s commercial disaster ended her Bollywood career.
