Happy New Year movie (HNY) is a 2014 Bollywood musical heist comedy-drama film directer is Farah Khan and producer is Gauri Khan under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment.
Film was distributed worldwide by Yash Raj Films. Shahrukh Khan with the director Farah Khan working third time together; they previously worked on previous Hit film Main Hoon Na (2004) and Om Shanti Om (2007), the 2nd film Deepika Padukone is also as the female lead actress.
Happy New Year movie was releasing on 24th October in India and 23rd October in Dubai, in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu language with nearly 4200 screens in Hindi while 800 screens in Tamil/Telugu, the biggest release for a Hindi film in India at that time.
Film reviews are mostly mix reviews from critics but it grossed 50 crore INR in India on its opening first day, setting the record for the highest-first day collection made by an Indian film to that time, and over 400.03 crore INR (US$56 million) worldwide in full run, becoming among the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences features the film’s script in their library.

Pre-production and Casting :
Film Plans for the film started as far back as 2005 with an ensemble cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Uday Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, Manisha Koirala, Ameesha Patel, Priyanka Chopra, Raveena Tandon and Zayed Khan. The film was post-poned for unknown reasons and instead, Farah Khan made Om Shanti Om (2007), which starred Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. After her film Tees Maar Khan (2010), Farah started to re-consider the possibilities of the film and screenwriting was completed by October 2012.
When the film was revived, the filmmakers wanted an established actress in the lead role with Shahrukh Khan. In December 2012, media reported showed that the makers had approached Priyanka Chopra for the role, who was their first choice for the film after the script was revamped.
However, Priyanka Chopra turned down the film due to dates issue; the schedule was clashing with another film she had signed.Several actresses were considered for the role, such as Sonakshi Sinha, Asin, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Parineeti Chopra and Katrina Kaif, Finally Deepika Padukone was finalized, making it her third time film with Shahrukh Khan after Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express (2013).
Shahrukh was reported to be playing the role of a con artist in the film which had Deepika in the role of a Marathi dancer. At a point, John Abraham was to play one of the supporting roles but Sonu Sood replaced him. Boman Irani was confirmed by the director during an interview. In August 2013, Jackie Shroff was finalized to play the film’s negative role.
The director’s brother, Sajid Khan, would be making a guest appearance while actress Malaika Arora Khan was also signed to appear in a cameo. Naseerudin Shah’s son – Vivaan Shah was reported to play the role of a computer hacker. Actor-director Prabhu Deva seen in a dance as a cameo.
Film shooting :
Farah Khan made the official announcement of the film on social media account- Twitter. The first schedule of film shooting was began in Dubai in early September 2013. Arabian Business reported that a major portion of the film will be shot in the prestigious Atlantis, The Palm.
ShahRukh Khan was injured while shooting at JW Marriott Hotel, Mumbai On 23 January 2014. Though reported that earlier it was as minor at first, he suffered a fractured shoulder and a torn left knee patella, being advised rest for a while.
Mehboob Studios was used as one of the major locations while certain portions were also filmed near the Wilson College. The final schedule was completed in August 2014.
Happy New Year movie Songs / Music :
The film music composer are Vishal-Shekhar while the lyricist is Irshad Kamil. The full music album was launched on 1st October 2014.
Promotional music videos were released for “Indiawaale” on 21 September and “Manwa Laage” on 25 September respectively. After the music album was launched, promotional videos of the songs “Lovely”, “Nonsense Ki Night” and “Satakli” were also released.
A song, India Waale, is in Just Dance Now, DLC in Just Dance 2015 and is part of the Just Dance Unlimited service for 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Then removed from Just Dance Now and Just Dance Unlimited for unknown reasons.

Critics reviews :
- Madhureeta Mukherjee from Times of India gave 2.5 star out of 5 star and stated that “The cast pulls off their acts well; and leave you with some feel-good moments, but not enough to last three long hours. Diwali fireworks are all about sparkle, phatakas and some crackers anyway.”
- Paloma Sharma from rediff.com also gave 2.5 star from 5 star and writed that “Happy New Year is a film that’s bound to make you feel good, but trust me, the feeling won’t last.”
- Saurabh Gupta from Indian Express gave the film 2 star from 5 stars stated that “Mera Bharat Mahan sentiments” type movie, and a cross between an Ocean’s 11/12 and “Flashdance”.
- Rohit Vats of Hindustan Times rated the film 2.5 star from 5 and criticize mainly on originality, said that “Originality? What’s that, ask Farah Khan in Happy New Year”.
