Story of the film

Dukaan is set in Anand, Gujarat, based on actual occurrences. It examines the commercial surrogacy industry. It is also viewed from an ethical and emotional perspective by writer and filmmaker Siddharth Garima. Monika Panwar’s character Jasmine is a fiery young girl who has been physically abused by her father. After she and Sumer (Sikandar Kher) establish a family, an unforeseen circumstance forces her to use commercial surrogacy.

But she develops a relationship with the fetus. When the young woman feels hurt by Diya’s (Monali Thakur) rejection of her maternal longing, she flees. When the kid’s biological parents forbid her from raising him as his aaya (governess), the remainder of the novel revolves around her struggle to regain custody of the boy.

She develops a kinship with the unborn child, nevertheless. When Diya (Monali Thakur), the young woman’s biological mother, rejects her maternal urge, she becomes offended and flees. Her struggle to regain custody of the boy after his biological parents forbid her from raising him as his aaya (governess) takes up the remainder of the narrative.

The focus is on the character (Jasmine) rather than the plot, and the screenplay takes a while to reach the main point of the movie. The narrative lacks the emotional connection that such a delicate subject requires and is only sporadically captivating. The main focus of the narrative is Jasmine’s attempts to atone for her transgressions and get back together with her kid. However, the conclusion turns out to be more ambitious, oversimplified, and hasty.

Siddharth-Garima, Shreyas Puranik, and Divya Kumar’s music lends gravity to the plot and storyline, while Anirban Chatterjee’s photography produces a breathtaking and vibrant atmosphere.

Even as she grows emotionally, Jasmine maintains her inherent boldness and has an intriguing storyline. Monika Panwar does a fantastic job with this. The actress enthralls in every moment and executes the role well. As the distressed parents for whom surrogacy is the last resort, Monali Thakur and Soham Majumdar both provide powerful performances. In a brief appearance, Sikandar Kher excels as a devoted and unorthodox spouse.

Although Dukaan has a compelling premise and a compelling lead performance, the execution falls short, leaving the audience wanting more.

Release

Dukaan debuted in theaters on April 5, 2024. A special screening was conducted in Ahmedabad, and over 300 surrogates were invited.

Review

Reviewer Dhaval Roy of the Times of India rated Dukaan three stars out of five, saying, “It’s an interesting concept with a strong lead performance, but the execution falters, leaving one wanting more.”

From its clumsy opening to its corny concluding sequences, Dukaan is not sure how to handle its original message about finding families and parenthood, according to Times Now’s Sonal Pandya, who gave the movie a rating of two stars out of five.

According to Rohit Bhatnagar of The Free Press Journal, Mimi and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke are still far better options if you are willing to try some Garba dancing routines, want to learn more about Gujarati culture, or want to see a newcomer, Monika Panwar, at her finest.

According to Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com, who gave it a rating of 1/5 stars, its sarcastic viewpoint and lighthearted handling of a delicate subject create a mess of things.

“The Year’s Worst Film Is Possibly Here,” said Ishita Sengupta of OTTPlay, adding that although Dukaan is about surrogacy, it also serves as a warning about how not to make a movie.
