Story of the film

One-night movies rely on a tightly wound plot in which, because of the short running time, every scene must be significant. Blackout, which was written and directed by Devang Shashin Bhavsar, first suggests this promise. During a citywide power outage, we meet Lenny D’Souza (Vikrant Massey), a crime reporter who goes out for meals. Lenny, however, is forced to escape with a stolen chest, a dead body, and some unlikely allies after a chance encounter with a van full of armed robbers. These include a mysterious woman named Shruti (Mouni Roy), two petty thieves (Karan Sudhakar Sonawane as Thik and Saurabh Dilip Ghadge as Thak, a pun on Tik-Tok), and an inebriated man named Bewdya (Sunil Grover).

Although Blackout’s idea presents an intriguing setting for a dark comedy, the film’s weak writing and dense plot cause it to fall flat. The story loses focus and becomes repetitious in its quest to show Lenny a night of mayhem. The second half adds a swarm of new characters with little build-up and implausible plot twists as the story loses steam. For example, Bewdya’s narrative seems rushed, and the appearance of Mugil Anna (Sooraj Pops), a mafia don, further challenges viewers’ faith. The ensemble is already packed, and Detective Arvind (Jeeshu Sengupta) adds yet another unnecessary story strand.

Vikrant Massey gives a strong performance as Lenny despite the film’s flaws. Even in the more bizarre parts of the movie, his comedic timing is excellent. Though his character journey appears forced, Sunil Grover’s portrayal of the inebriated Shayar Bewdya provides some humorous moments. One-liners and the antics of Karan Sudhakar Sonawane and Saurabh Dilip Ghadge make the movie laugh a little, especially when they try to get back Lenny’s stolen camera.

Review

The film is so ham-fisted that it takes no more than ten minutes to give itself away,” Saibal Chatterjee said in his NDTV review, giving it a one-star rating.

According to Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com, who gave the movie a two-star rating, Blackout doesn’t finish its opening sequences until the intermission point, which highlights how disorganized the narrative is. The absence of humor and camaraderie, however, is what throws a wrench in its gears.

The most compelling aspect of the film is its constant unpredictability, which entertains and keeps the audience hooked until the very end, commented Mahpara Kabir of ABP News, who gave it a rating of 3.5/5.

You might overlook the subpar performance if this group entertained, but they don’t, according to Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times. Unfortunately, nothing goes well for the movie.

India Today’s Sana Farzeen gave the movie a two-star rating and noted that it only makes you laugh when everything is resolved in the final ten minutes.

The dialogues are funny enough to make you laugh, but the twists are so obvious that you’re never on the edge of your seat, which is crucial for a crime thriller,” Simran Khan of Times Now noted in his three-star review.

Ganesh Aaglave gave Firstpost a three-star rating, stating that Sunil Grover’s portrayal as Bewdya, also known as Asghar Bhai, steals the show, while Vikrant Massey does a good job as Lenny. Jisshu Sengupta and Mouni have fulfilled their obligations.

According to Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in, the 122-minute movie takes place over one night that feels like several shorter evenings.
