Story of the film
The novel Anokha Rishta tells the tale of Mary and Robert Brown’s peculiar bond. Mary, a 19-year-old orphan, resides in a nun-run orphanage. She is artistically gifted and received a 92.5% in her final year of school. She had a philanthropist sponsoring her schooling. Following his death, Mother Superior visits with Robert “Bob” Brown, the elderly man’s son, and asks him to keep funding Mary’s college studies.
After speaking with Nasir Khan, his father’s trusty assistant, Bob, who is currently in charge of his father’s company, concurs. In order for Mary to keep writing to Bob and for Bob to be able to carry out her wishes, Bob demands that Mary not be informed of the passing of her sponsor. Although Bob is unaware of Mary’s appearance, she continues to write to him requesting new outfits, accessories, and other items. When Mary is in her college and hostel, Mother Superior tells her to say that her parents reside in Dubai rather than revealing that she is an orphan.
Bob is a wealthy businessman, over 40, and a handsome bachelor. Mary falls in love with Bob after meeting him through her college buddy Sweety. She doesn’t realize that Bob is her sponsor and “her uncle,” to whom she frequently writes letters.
Bob employs a young man named Bill. Bill learns that Bob had feelings for Dr. Padma, but the two chose not to be married because they didn’t want to defy their fathers’ desires. Bob sees Mary at Sweety’s birthday celebration wearing the outfit and accessories he sent to the girl in the orphanage, but he doesn’t give it much thought because he believes she is from Dubai. Mary rejects Bill despite their love for one another. Bill chooses to take his profession more seriously and begins working more earnestly after multiple attempts to win Mary over fail.
Mary is so in love with Bob that she keeps living out her dream of being married. Since Mother Superior screens all incoming and outgoing letters, she avoids talking to “her uncle” about her sentiments and mental anguish (of not receiving a positive response from Bob).
Bob gives Bill advice on how to win over a young girl. Bill confesses his love for Mary to Bob. Bob is asked by Bill’s brother Alex to assist in bringing Bill and Mary together. Bob plans a picnic, but because he is upset with Mary, Bill does not show up.
Mary pops the question to Bob, who has come to the picnic only to hang out with him. Bob notes that he would have had a daughter Mary’s age if he had married at the appropriate time. Bill informs Mary that although Bob had feelings for Dr. Padma, the two chose not to get married because they did not want to defy their respective families’ desires. Mary is furious and tells Padma that she is expecting Bob’s child in an attempt to vent her frustration. Startled, Padma chastises Bob for his carelessness.
Mary tells Bob that she was attempting to show him how much she loves him, but Bob takes her to his office and yells at her, believing she is pregnant with Bill’s child and has lied to the doctor.
Mary’s disappointment in love leads her to choose to become a nun. Mary refuses to change her mind despite Dr. Padma’s attempts to dissuade her. Without opening it or understanding its contents, she sends a final letter to “her uncle” and specifically asks the head of the orphanage to deliver it to him. In order to stop Mary from taking this extreme action, Padma suggests that Bob wed Mary.
Mary informs Bill during their first meeting that she has decided to become a nun since she fell in love with Bob and he turned her down. Bob and Bill argue about this. Bob enters the room as Mary is ready to leave the orphanage, explains that he was her uncle, the invisible sponsor, and proposes to her.
