Story of the film
In a kingdom that has been severely affected by drought for many years, a young Brahman named Aravasu falls in love with a tribal girl named Nittilai. Aravasu obtains approval from her father and the elders of the village before she marries Nittilai. Aravasu’s brother Paravasu has been pleasing the rain god Devraj Indra for the last seven years by performing a big fire sacrifice called the “yajna” rite. The father of Aravasu and Paravasu, Raibhya, hates his two sons and thinks that Paravasu’s wife, Vishaka, is having an extramarital affair with Yavakri.
Raibhya derived this from the fact that Yavakri and Vishaka were in love before to Yavakri’s ten-year imprisonment in the jungle, when he worshipped Devraj Indra in an attempt to attain Brahma Jnana, the highest form of divinity. When he returns, Yavakri makes another attempt to accompany Vishakha to and from the water well. Although she is married, she first declines him, but in the end she gives in, and they start having illicit sex in the caverns and woods.
One day, Aravasu and Nittilai spot a full-water boat, which Aravasu knows to be Vishaka’s. Then, Nittilai witnesses Yavakri and Vishaka sharing a kiss in a cave. When Aravasu sees the nude Vishaka, Nittilai candidly tells him about her initial attempt to flee and take him with her. Yavakri finds this candor repugnant and becomes enraged, telling Nittilai angrily that she is cursed and would die in a month. Nittilai is afraid, while Aravasu is furious.
After being accused of infidelity, Vishakha becomes enraged and tells Raibhya that she was with Yavakri when they arrive home. An enraged Raibhya summons the demonic Brahma Rakshas to murder Yavakri. He also says that Yavakri will be called a coward if he does not enter his father’s ashram and try to save himself. In an effort to show off his power, Yavakri waits for the demon to arrive. Vishakha tells him to flee to his father’s ashram so that he and Raibhya will survive if Yavakri defeats the Brahma Rakshas. Raibhya will have to end his life if he doesn’t.
Vishakha is inspired to behave defiantly by Yavakri’s refusal to back down, which leads to a distrusting argument between the two of them. The demon kills Yavakri as he is now fleeing to his father’s ashram for protection. Vishakha begs Aravasu to cremate him, which keeps him from meeting with Nittilai’s father and her village elders. As a result, she is forced to marry into her own tribe.
After entering covertly during the evening, Parvasu encounters Vishakha. Vishakha tells him everything and begs him to kill her when Paravasu raises the arrow and shoots at his father. On his return trip to the Yajna site, the devil welcomes him, calling him brother and begging him to save himself as a damned soul; but Paravasu scorns him.
The day after his father’s funeral, Aravasu goes back to the yajna site, but Paravasu beats him brutally and accuses him of being the cause of the death. As Nittilai discovers this and tries to save Aravasu, she finds out that her brother and husband are after her and will kill her right away if she disobeys the customs of the tribe.
In an act he stages to entertain the Devas, Sutradhar chooses Aravasu to play a major role. While intoxicated by bhang, Aravasu loses control of the ceremony, breaking the havan and throwing the offerings to the starving peasants. Nittilai exposes herself and is killed by her husband in a last-ditch effort to stop Aravasu; in the yajna pyre, Paravasu admits to killing his father and concedes defeat. When Devraj Indra eventually shows up, he is appeased and gives Aravasu one wish.
As Aravasu wishes for Nittilai to resurrect, Brahma Rakshas shows up and implores him to free his soul. He learns from Indra that to free the demon’s spirit and bring Nittilai back, he needs to tilt the time wheel forward and backward. Rain begins to fall as Aravasu asks Indra to free the Demon’s soul while wearing sorrowful eyes.

Review of the film
This film’s reviews are mostly negative from critics, Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave 1.5 star from 5 star and criticize the film by stating that “Jackie Shroff is restrained. Nagarjuna is first-rate in a role that has grey shades. Sonali Kulkarni is expressive enough to leave a strong impact. Prabhu Deva is just right. Mohan Agashe and Raghuvir Yadav are, like always, extremely dependable. This film will be liked by connoisseurs of meaningful cinema, besides winning laurels in the international circuit. But for the masses of India, the film has precious little to offer.”
