Themes and influences

The movie was a stinging satire on the corruption in the court system and the exploitation of the disadvantaged by the able and the powerful, and it was purportedly based on a factual incident that was covered on page 7 of a local newspaper. Aakrosh is a part of a body of work by renowned playwright Vijay Tendulkar that explores violence. He previously wrote Shyam Benegal’s Nishant (1974) and went on to pen Govind Nihalani’s next unexpected breakout success, Ardh Satya (1983).

Here, the victim is depicted as having been subjected to such extreme oppression and human rights violations that he is shown to be so traumatized. For the majority of the film, the victim merely maintains a surprised expression; yet, later on, he utilizes the same brutality to communicate his own sense of being violated and his wrath.

A similar technique was used by Andrei Tarkovsky to display the icons in dazzling color at the conclusion of his three-hour black-and-white film Andrei Rublev. The victim’s voice is heard for the second time in the movie towards the end (the first time is in a flashback as he futilely tries to save his wife).
