- Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama rated the film 4 star from 5 stars, stated that “Overall, 83 is a winner on pitch, on screen too. Those who witnessed the victory would be glad to relive the experience, while those who didn’t, will get a chance to witness how things unfolded during one of the greatest episodes of Indian sports history.”
- Rachana Dubey of The Times of India rated 4 star out of 5, writed that “You realise this film is not about winning on a world stage, it’s about earning respect and director Kabir Khan does set a high benchmark for himself, once again”. She also appreciated Ranveer Singh’s performance as a Kapil Dev’s “unmissable style of talking, perfectly recreating Natraj shot, his bowling action and body language.”
- Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express also rated 3.5 star from 5 stars, writed that “Ranveer Singh, disappearing into his Kapil Dev. ‘Aukaat se zyada khelna padega’, he says, sounding remarkably like Kapil, and goes out and does it. The slightly protruding teeth, the discomfort with English (those self-deprecatory digs at himself are smile-inducing), the deliberate delivery, the never-say-die spirit, is all spot on. (We see the real-life Kapil cheerleading from the stands, and the house comes down). Batting, bowling, being ‘cap’, staying on top: his playing ka koi jawwab nahin”.
