Story of the film

Manoj Kumar Sharma is a clerk’s kid who was born in the dacoit-infested Chambal. Because he struck a dishonest police officer, his father—an honest man—is suspended. Manoj gets ready for his Class 12 exams by creating cheat sheets, much like other students. DSP Dushyant Singh, a recently moved police officer, ceases to cheat in the school, nonetheless. Manoj is among the pupils who fail the exam as a result. In the interim, his father challenges his suspension at the High Court. Manoj and his brother decide to run a touring rickshaw as a way to assist at home.

When he tries to persuade their passengers to take a bus, Manoj’s brother is unjustly accused of punching the MLA’s local goon, which the police officers frame him for. But Manoj helps his brother out, and DSP Dushyant tells him to “stop cheating” so he can become an officer like him.

After a year, Manoj earns a B.A. to become a DSP and passes his tests honestly. He leaves with all of his savings from his paternal grandmother to study in Gwalior, but along route he loses everything to a woman who takes them as he is asleep in the bus.

He then learns that a government decision has resulted in the MPPSC Group I exams not being held for the next three years. This breaks his aspirations of becoming a DSP. He roams the streets until he is about to faint, at which time he is fed by the proprietor of a neighboring hotel that is next to the train station. There he meets Pritam Pandey, who had also arrived to prepare for the PSC exam. His father gives Pandey a call and tells him to prepare for the UPSC exam in Delhi. Manoj finds out about UPSC and travels to Delhi with Pritam in order to further his studies and ultimately become an IPS officer.

Manoj meets Gauri bhaiya, a fellow candidate, during his final attempt at passing, who gives him a job and a place to study. When Gauri bhaiya fails his last attempt, he creates a tea business called “Restart” and helps other UPSC candidates.

After failing the preliminary examination on his first attempt, Manoj returns the next year with Gauri’s support and succeeds in passing it. He meets and falls in love with UKPSC candidate Shraddha Joshi while at a coaching center. He doesn’t say that he is a literature graduate; she takes it for granted that he is an aeronautical engineer.

Despite his best efforts, Manoj is unable to pass his primary exams that year, and when Shraddha finds out about his deceit, their relationship suffers as well. Feeling discouraged, Manoj decides to go to Mussoorie and express his love and apology to Shraddha. She suggests that he go back to Delhi and keep getting ready. Upon returning home, Manoj discovers his grandmother has passed suddenly. With a goal to pass the test, he leaves for Delhi again.

Frustrated, Gauri gives up on doing odd jobs and orders Manoj to move into his own home so he can devote all of his attention to his academics. He eventually passed the major exams, and Shraddha passed her UKPSC exams to become a deputy collector.

In the meantime, Shraddha’s family is informed by Pritam, who failed his examinations, that she has been having affairs with Manoj. Manoj gets very upset with Pritam, but he also realizes that Pritam’s father forced him to join the UPSC even though Pritam truly wants to be a reporter. Manoj counsels Pritam to oppose his father.

Manoj answers every question during the interview with sincerity. He peruses the letter that Shraddha wrote and delivered to him prior to the interview, pleading with him to wed her regardless of the interview’s result. After two months, the results are released, and Manoj has been promoted to the level of IPS officer.

One year later, Manoj visited the Mandsaur police station as an IPS officer to express his gratitude to DSP Dushyant Singh for his support. Manoj and Shraddha get married, while Pritam begins working as a news reporter.

12th Fail is a funny and thought-provoking film that offers an innovative portrayal of the life of an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, according to Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV, who scored it 3.5 stars out of 5. The screenplay creates a genuinely likable story. It stays away from all extravagance in order to salvage as much drama as possible from the ups and downs of the man’s journey.

Online 12th Film Movie Review By Komal Nahta

In his review, Mid-Day’s Mayank Shekhar awarded the movie This is the India Story four stars out of five.

In her reviews, Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times said that 12th Fail is a must-watch to comprehend the struggles and feelings that UPSC students experience as well as to have insight into our educational system as a whole—a point that Chopra made in 3 Idiots (2009).

Despite the music and occasional mood swings, Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave the film three stars out of five, stating that 12th Fail is primarily a grounded reality film with characters who seem to have wandered off the street and are hanging out with us, sharing inspirational and thought-provoking life lessons. Along with a sizable cast, it also stars a sizable number of young people who hang out in neighborhoods like Mukherjee Nagar in North West Delhi that are well-known for having coaching facilities. An iconic story from India is the picture of these people studying day and night in cramped quarters far from their homes in an effort to pass exams and transform their identities.

Rediff.com’s Deepa Gahlot commended Vikrant Massey’s performance, saying that it would be unfair to an actor who displayed such unadulterated genius if Massey did not receive a National Award for this movie.

In his review, Dhaval Roy of The Times of India rated 12th Fail with four stars out of five, saying that it is a fantastic movie that comes highly recommended. Almost every moment in the 147-minute film leaves you feeling astounded and inspired. Kudos to Chopra for ensuring that every character in the movie gets the finest opportunity possible.

India’s Bhavna Agarwal Vikrant Massey passed with flying colors on the performance sheet today, with a rating of four stars out of five.

The Hindu’s Anuj Kumar evaluated the film and penned the following assessment of 12th Fail: Vidhu Vinod Chopra gives another heartfelt, if not magical, hug of hope.

In her assessment, Sneha Bengani of CNBC TV18 said that Vikrant Massey overcomes obstacles in this inspirational tale of tenacity.

Zee News‘ Gunjan D. Bidani rated it four stars out of five, noting that Without meaning to sound dramatic, I think 12th Fail would be ideal. To truly watch 12th Fail, one must be strong. It should go without saying that the film’s central theme is a severe lack of basic human rights. The storyline of the Vidhu Vinod Chopra film involves a daily assault of homework, complex social interactions, menial jobs to support oneself, and unfiltered emotional outbursts.

In his assessment, Sajesh Mohan of Onmanorama stated that Manav Shrotriya’s painstakingly created soundtrack accentuates the pleasures and sorrows of Manoj’s voyage. A contemplative emphasis is added by the way Manav recycles and employs background noise that fades in and out to isolate Manoj and his feelings even in busy settings.
