Earning over 810 million rs. worldwide, Hum Saath-Saath Hain went on to become the highest-grossing film of the year. It received predominantly positive reviews from critics. It was also the first Bollywood film to be played in Canadian theatres, with six screenings in Toronto.

Salman Khan’s performance gets him Best Actor nomination at the Zee Cine Awards held in 2000. Mohnish Behl received a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 45th Filmfare Awards . The film was also dubbed into the Telugu and released with the title Premaanuraagam.

Hum Saath Saath Hain Film Story :

The High class Chaturvedi Family, the father, Ramkishan Chaturvedi, a rich businessman, and his wife Mamta Chaturvedi. Ramkishan has 4 children: Prem(Salman Khan) , Vivek(Mohnish Behl), Vinod(Saif Ali Khan) and Sangeeta(Neelam Kothari). They are Bound -By Values- love lives of each of the three sons : Vivek with Sadhna(Tabu), the daughter of his father’s business associate, Prem with Preeti(Sonali Bendre), the daughter of a family friend and Vinod with Sapna(Karisma Kapoor).

Mamta’s 3 best friends along with Sapna’s father, fill her head with thoughts as to why Vivek should not be in charge of the family inheritance, as he is the stepson and not Mamta’s real son. This causes Mamta to feel scared about what will happen.

When Sangita’s brother-in-law cheats her husband, Anand from the inheritance and his share in the family business. This makes Mamta very worried and makes her question her husband’s decision to make Vivek, her step son, the head of their family business. She demands that Ramkishan divide the business equally between all the sons instead of putting Vivek in charge.

Ramkishan refuses because he thinks this will divide the family. Vivek is heartbroken when he finds out but decides to defuse the situation by telling his mother that he will move back to their ancestral village Rampur to take care of the new factory that they had recently set up there. In his place he asks his father to put Prem in charge of the family empire. His wife, Sadhna supports his decision. Vivek and Sadhna move to Rampur along with Vinod. Prem flat out refuses to replace his brother as the head of the family. But Vivek convinces him to go along with the plan in the interest of preventing further conflict within the family.

Sangita’s brother-in-law finally realizes that he made a big mistake in cheating his brother and breaking up his family. This makes Mamta realize her mistake too and she reunites with Vivek. Finally, Sadhna gives birth to a baby boy and the other two couples are finally married.

Pre-post Production :

This film shooting is done in Film City and palace of Jodhpur in Rajsthan. The shooting finished in July 1999.

Anil Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor were approached for the role of Vivek; upon their rejection, Mohnish Bahl was cast in the film. Rishi Kapoor was also offered the role of Anand, but after his declination again, Nitish Bharadwaj was approached, but because of being busy shooting Vishnu Puran, he rejected, and the role went to Mahesh Thakur. Madhuri Dixit and Raveena Tandon were offered the roles of Sadhna and Preeti respectively but they declined the offer. Raveena didn’t wanted to work in a multi-starrer film. Laxmikant Berde was supposed to play the role of Anwar, but this time Shakti Kapoor was selected for the role. Aishwarya Rai was also approached for a role in the film but rejected it due to date issue.

Film Shooting :

The maximum principal photography of Hum Saath-Saath Hain was done in Film City, Mumbai, and left portions were shot in Jodhpur, Rajasthan like the song “Mhare Hiwade Mein Naache Mor”.

Film Casting :

Salman Khan, Mohnish Bahl, Reema Lagoo, Alok Nath, Himani Shivpuri, Satish Shah and Ajit Vachani who all were part of Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! were cast in this film. Among this Salman, Lagoo, Nath, Bahl and Vachani appeared in Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya too.

While discussing Bahl’s role, it was first offered to Anil Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor but upon their refusal Bahl was cast to play Vivek and prepared it by making a habit of keeping right hand in pocket accordingly the role.

Barjatya initially approached Madhuri Dixit for Sadhna’s role, who played the lead actress in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! but declined owing to her popularity, and then Manisha Koirala got the offer; even she was unable to take it due to filming for Mann, before Tabu was chosen.

Later, the makers talked with Rishi Kapoor again for Anand’s role, but his refusal came again as did by Nitish Bhardwaj when offered too, and thus Mahesh Thakur was roped in.

Film Release :

Hum Saath-Saath Hain had released earlier but the music director Raamlaxman took time to check the soundtrack album for second time to not suffer any mistake. Following all work including post-production, cinematography, choreography and other things was completed followed by promotions, Hum Saath-Saath Hain finally hit the theatre screens on November 2, 1999 during Diwali.

This film music composer is Raamlaxman, working with Sooraj Barjatya for the third time. This film music album have seven songs and playback singers Kumar Sanu (as Prem), Alka Yagnik (as Preeti), Kavita Krishnamurthy (as Sapna) Udit Narayan (as Vinod), Anuradha Paudwal (as Sadhna), Hariharan (as Vivek), and Sonu Nigam (as Anwar). Raamlaxman plagiarised his track “A B C D” from the Spanish singer Jeanette’s 1974 song “Porque te vas”.

Savera R Someshwar of Rediff said that “It is definitely time for Sooraj to look out for a new music director. Even the lyrics – barring “Maare hidwa ma naache mor” and “Mayya yashoda” — are banal…”
