Production :

The film shooting done mainly in at Yashraj Studios, Filmistan, Film City and other locations in Mumbai. The makers bought the rights to the short story Tum Kab Jaoge, Athithi? by Sharad Joshi.

Adaptation :

Author and cartoonist Abid Surti has sued makers of Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge claiming that story is directly lifted from his Gujarati novel Bauter Varas No Babo published in 1976, which was later translated in Hindi as Bahatar Saal Ka Baccha. He has filed a case with The Film Writers Association (FWA) and has demanded Rs 11.5 million as compensation, the case is still pending judgment.

Sequel :

A sequel to film named Guest iin London was released on 7 July 2017.

Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama gave it 3.5 star from 5 star, and stated that “the film was “fun” and “frolic” for all.”
Times of India critics gave 3 star from 5 star and stated that “Wait and watch out for some more of the Basu Chatterjee-Hrishikesh Mukherjee brand revival.Performances of Paresh Rawal’s pitches a picture perfect Chachaji, while Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Mishra are immensely watchable.”

Komal Nahta gave it 3 star from 5 star and explained how it should be acclaimed for its family love, and the great message at the end.
